I have a 93 isuzu rodeo that at times smells like fuel and gets 10 or 11 miles per gallon yet runs fine,except for an occational 2000 rpm idle. what could cause the poor milage and smell of fuel?

You would need to check with a local garage for repair prices.
To find your average mileage, fill up the tank, write down the mileage, then do it again at around 200 miles. Divide the mileage traveled by the number of gallons used. I would recommend filling up after you have used about 8 or 9 gallons to prevent running out of gas. You can't go by the federal mpg numbers because everybody drives differently.

check the cutoff soleniod on top of gas converter incoming side cos the engine starts on petrol ive got the same truck colin down under

All of the symptoms that you have talked about point to a fuel pump that is starting to fail. I would take it to a mechanic and have the fuel pressure checked. It is a simple procedure and should be rather inexpensive.

get a diesel with a manual gearbox ,a petrol auto isnt worth nothing and you cannot give them away ,2001 you might just about get 2000 euros compared with 7000 euros minimum for a diesel version ,at around 5 dollars plus a gallon here you understand why

Check make sure all plugs are firing. Sounds like what my 93 Rodeo was doing-Idled okay but very rough when in gear. Turns out only 5 out of 6 plugs were firing due to a defective ignition module- 100 bucks later it works fine.
