Speedometer is wiggling and making a grinding/whirling noise. What could the problem be?

its a super old car 1990s" or older with cable drive speedo
and most have the actual speedo bad.(guts)
I fixed losts in year 2000. using 2 used speedos and swapped guts to get one good one.
yes I dead 1997 sidekick, G16b. the speedo has needle and shaft and a spring and bushing
the silly bushing wears out, and the needles goes nuts.
the needle is magnetically coupled,

I have shared this with many sidekick owners world wide.
there is no fix.for bushing, (hacks maybe)
there are no spares sold by maker here.(out of stock forever)
only buy used speedo cluster off fleabay ,works
warning there are 15+ speedos, most will not work (2door and 4 not the same, and county) just in North America. more world wide.
the transmission has different gearing and axles change this tool.
secret, speed P/N pulled out, cluster, bottom has the real part number.>> look here.

1997 Mercury Mountaineer speedometer stopped working

Sounds like a broken cable. The cable runs from the rear of the speedometer to the gearbox/transmission. Sometimes the cable can come out of speedometer but not usually on it's own. If you have done any work on or behind dashboard then you may have dislodged it. I would check there first.

Speedometer in my 1995 miata stopped working while i was driving down the road? any suggestions?

Hi,
The reason for the speedometer not working should be the cable connecting the dashboard and the transmission. This could be caused by a problem on the speedometer cable. This cable is connected at the back of your dashboard to the transmission. Check out if the cable broke or has disconnected from the back of the dashboard. Thank you for contacting www.Fixya.com

My speedometer and odometer on my 98 ford explorer

the speedometer/odometer works on a cable that goes into the side of the transmission with one 10mm bolt holding it in. It sounds as if the cable has been broken, pulled loose, or siezed up. Its easy to check the end under the vehicle but its very complicated checking it inside the dashboard. If you are a do it yourself type of person, id look underneath and see if the connection under the vehicle is still connected. Look on left rear of the transmission for a cable that goes into it and is held with a "Y" bracket and a small bolt. The dashboard part is the type of job where u got to make sure you remember where each screw goes to get back together.

Speedometer bounces while driving

your spedo cable is probably just loose which can be fixed by tightening or replaceing. Might as well go ahead and replace it since its a 14 year old truck and its the more sure fire way to fix the bounce.

Replace speedometer calbe

Replace the Speedometer Cable

1 - Remove the old speedometer cable from your car, first take off the doghouse and then the engine cover.

2 - Remove the screw underneath the dashboard and take down the steering column. This will give you access to the back of your speedometer.

3 - Take off the drive shaft bolt, and "O" ring, insert the speedometer cable through the firewall.

4 - Remove speedometer cable securing clamps from the engine compartment and on the transmission.

5 - Release the drive shaft nut from the "right angle" adapter (The nut is attached to the back of the transfer case).

Installing the Speedometer Cable

1 - Place the square end of the speedometer cable into the adapter and secure the drive shaft nut.

2 - Pull the speedometer cable through the firewall to the rear of the speedometer.

3 - Secure the "O" ring and attach the speedometer cable to the rear of the speedometer/odometer. It should be engaged in the speedometer's square hold. Tighten the drive shaft nut again.

4 - Replace the clamps that will secure the speedometer cable onto the transmission and in the engine compartment. Replace the engine cover.

5 - Drive your car slowly to be sure your speedometer is working properly. If it is, replace the doghouse. If you're stilling having problems, take the car to your mechanic.
