Stalling on the road. No check engine light on. No restart

I just bought a 99 4 Runner and on my way back from a trip in the snow it lost power and stalled out as I was driving up the highway. It would re start after several minutes but at a very rough idle and then die again. At one attempt I heard what may have been a backfire or something under the hood...perhaps electrical even. Any ideas? I have a half tank of gas in it.

Hello, it sounds like the timing belt may have slipped on the gears, the top part of the timing cover can be removed to check the timing marks with the engine at TDC.

SOURCE: 1996 Camry 100 km stalling

This sounds like a common Camry problem. After driving my vehicle for about 20 minutes in highway traffic, the vehicle has difficulty idling when I slow down behind another car or turn a corner. This quickly deteriorates and then the car actually stalls when I slow right down or
Then usually the car starts again right away, but when I slow down again, stalls. Then when I start it up again, usually in traffic, I can’t get the shift into Drive. If I allow it to sit engine off for 3 – 5 minutes, it starts again, the shift can slide into shift, and the car goess off again, like nothing happened.

SOURCE: engine wont idle unless you keep your foot on the gas pedal

WHEN DRIVER YESTERDAY, I FIND WHEN I PUT MY FOOT ON THE GAS, THE KEPT CUTTING OUT. THEN I WILL HAVE TO LEAVE IT FOR A FEW MINS AND IT STARTS AGAIN, SO I HAVE FOUND THAT IN THE PART WHERE I PUT THE OIL IN THERE IS A CREAMY BROWN DEPOSIT IN THERE

RESET THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON THE 99 HONDA ACCORD

THIS IS HOW YOU RESET THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON THE 99 HONDA ACCORD. 1. With the Car Off, Press and hold down the Odometer Trip Reset Button. 2. While still pressing the Trip Reset Button, Turn the Ignition Key half way on where all your oil, check engine lights etc.. turn on. Don't turn it as far as you would to normally start the car. Wait a few seconds and the Check engine light will turn off. 3. Turn the key back to the Off position and you're done. What a scam Honda has with the BS Check Engine Light.

I was driving down the road and lost power..no gas..no brakes...no steering.

did it restart?
the engine stalled, as such you
get
no engine power
no P/S reverts to manual steering, you did not loose steering.
same with P/B power brakes, you didnt lose it you lost power
assist, brakes will stop just as vast but takes a husky foot.
in school (driving) we were though to drive, stalled engine.
i guess most school went dumb. (seen it)
now stalls
engine stall for a vast number or reasons.

do that tuneup not called the 60k mile service point list. did you.?
cars ignored all fail, no car runs 300k miles service free,
skip them and get stranded, (i promise)

1: lost electric power to the EFI system.
2: engine overheated or lost compression for any reasons (complex)
3: lost spark
4: lost fuel
5: too much fuel, flooding, and stalling.
6: egr sticks open.
7: ISC sticks closed.
8:if not restart, say so and list expands way more...

cars are complex, it's not like a burned out desk lamp.
vast complexity and after 2007 , insane complexity.
avoid them 2007 and newer, sans NASA engineer.

Went on a road trip traveled about 350 miles when check engine light and ESC Off light came on. Lost power had to get off of highway and shut engine off. Restarted car ESC Off light went off but check...

if it happens again have the code pulled from the computer before clearing it out of the system.that is the only way you will know what the problem is and how serious it is.also have the charging system and battery checked.

Stalling

is your engine light on?
If so go to your local autozone and get the codes pulled for free.

I have a sneaking suspision it could be a catalytic converter problem.

but you need the codes if there is any.

Check engine light/engine stalling, related?

GET AN AUTOPARTS STORE TO READ THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CODE. OXYGEN SENSORS ARE COMMON CAUSES. DON'T SEND RAW GAS INTO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. IT WILL BE COSTLY TO REPLACE.

2006 Subaru ABS light and check engine light on, snowy conditions

An addition to my previous post (after talking to my husband more). Three of our wheels were snow packed. Not the wheel wells, but the inside of the wheels. He thinks that this is what caused the problem. The ABS sensors are located there. Having them encased in snow was likely what caused this condition. Solution = clean all the snow off your tires -- and the problem should go away. Sounds like the problem is moisture gets into the ABS sensor or something shorts out with the communications to those sensors.
