Hello I've 2013 Automatic Honda Civic(56kclicks) when I park it on an incline with the E Break on, it does not jerk while I shift from Parking to Reverse but it does when I don't put the E Break on

So, does it mean I need to get my car checked or every car does this?

  • terry stevens Apr 19, 2016

Every car does it. You should always park with the E brake applied.
Some gearboxes only have a small pin that locks them in park and if to much load is applied to this pin it will break. If this happens your car will roll down the incline and you could be left with a damages bill that most insurance companies will not cover.

When you have the E brake on the weight of the car is being held by the E brake. When you park the car in park and no E brake on, the weight of the car is loaded onto the drive train and gearbox.
The jerk (and clunk) is the preload being released from the drive train. Not good for your transmission and a bad way to leave a car parked.

When cold starting, with foot on brake and shifting automatic transmission into drive, car will lurch forward and if shifting into reverse car will lurch backward.

Hi,

if the car is on an incline and facing down, this would occur if you didn't have the parking break on. So please check for this.

Also, please double check that your acceleration pedal isn't temporarily stuck right after you start because that could cause what you're experience.

Thank you.

MY 2002 FORD ESCORT AUTOMATIC IS HARD TO PUT IN GEAR.DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY?

If you are parking on a hill, or an incline make sure to use your parking brake. When you park put your foot on the regular brake first and then apply the parking brake then shift into park. This will keep the car in place and not put pressure on the transmission. When you are about to leave do the same. Apple the regular brake, then shift in drive or reverse, then release the parking brake.

There most certainly IS a recall for this exact problem. The National Highway Transportation Safety Board case is: NHTSA Campaign ID Number: 13V143000. Go to this URL - http://autos.aol.com/cars-Honda-CR_V-2013/recalls/ - print out the page, and take it with your car to the Honda dealer to ask them how soon they will repair it - free of charge. Then you'll probably have to fight with them to have the body repair work done. Good luck.

You say it slides? The tires actually stay still and the vehicle moves? That has nothing to do with parking brake the tires are braking lose because they have no grip on the road(to narrow) or the road surface is slick..

I had difficulty shifting my from park to reverse while my ny 2003 Lincoln LS was parked on an fairly steep incline? Is that normal?

You should always use your parking brake. Leave your foot on the brake, then apply the parking brake. If you don't,the only thing holding the car, is the mechanical parking pawl in the transmission, and yes, it could break or fail to hold the weight off the vehicle, and it would roll away,as well as damage the trans.

Sounds like you may have damaged the parking claw. Put the parking brake on when you park on an incline, You may need a new parking gear or gear claw.

Safety in operating an automatic vehicle.

Hi Anthony
The noise you heard was probably the park locking mechanism trying to engage on the notches in the transmission gear train. If the car holds itself in P range there is no need to worry. These things can happen and normally manufacturers are aware of this and safety devices are already in place to limit damage or injury.e.g the parking mechanism is a small pin that will eventually break first withi=out causing the gear train to lock.
Let us know how you get on.
Cheers.
