SOURCE: gas smell and smoke

I don't see how trans fluid answers this question because i would first be wondering where th fuel smell and smoke are coming from... i had a leaking fuel rail on my truck and replace it along with the injectors and had better mpg and no fuel smell or smoke... maybe this helps better than just say trans fluid....

Most lkeley it is the solenoid that controls the link that has siezed. It gets the worst of conditions down there, so will need a clean and service if possible - or replacement.

How do I turn off 4x4 on a 2002 ford explorer?

You don't, it's all wheel drive, which means it puts power to the wheel or wheels where (it thinks) you need it, so it sometimes is acting like a regular 2WD vehicle, and seamless transitions to 4WD when you need it (like stabbing the gas turning right from a stop in the rain or snow). You can click 4WD HIGH or LOW and force it to power at least one wheel on each axle.

How can i make sure transfer case is unlocked on 97 explorer?

turn your wheel all the way left or right, hold it there and make a turn at 15-20 in a parking lot.if you feel the car shake and the front wheels kind of jump then your in 4WD.
