Car running rough at random when accelerating and also idle drops suddenly when slowing down and often completely stalls out when I stop. Smells strongly of gasoline when it stalls/almost stalls but I

Starts fine, will drive for a few mins fine then just start accelerating rough and then 80% of the time I am slowing down or stopping it will start shaking and smelling like gasoline then if I come to a complete stop it will often stall out completely or drop to 400rpm and then idle back up to 600/700rpm

This could be a lot of things. one of the tests that you need to run is shift it into nuetral when you are stopping and see if it still drops RPM and wants to stall. This will eliminate or conclude that it is a transmission issue. If it is still doing this then it could be a vacuum leak or fuel delivery issue.

Hi, I just went for a short test drive and if I switched into neutral after coming to an almost complete stop in 2nd it did not change although it didnt fall below 700ish or stall whatsoever, but if I changed into neutral from 3rd gear while slowing down the rpm would just move between 900/1000 right through until I have stopped and taken off again

The problem is the torque coverter clutch is not releasing. The issue might be the converter itself, or a bad solenoid.

SOURCE: 88 dodge dakota has rough idle and stalls at slow down.

Change/thoroughly clean the idle control solenoid. It may be sticking and causing rough idling.
Cleaning it is unlikely to be more than a short-term solution.

SOURCE: 1994 Sentra running rough

thanks for asking , i am sorry to tell you that the problem you asking for could be for a lot of reasons , but , i will try to help you by tell you some things to check it , first you should be sure that the car is not over heated , and and the sparks are good , and all the cylinders are working properly and that by removing each spark wire but every one separately and see if any change happen ,if no change happen with one of the sparks so you found the problem and it is that you r car don't work with all it's cylinders , but if that will not be easy for you to do it your self , so be sure that if you driven the car to a local garage no damage will happened , and don't worry that shouldn't cost you a lot of money , and thank you for using fixya.

SOURCE: low idle stalls out

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

What would cause my idle to be all over the place the car will not adle smooth it is either to high or it will act like it will stall and it smells like it is flooding when it almost stalls .

Here are the most common causes of idle surge, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.
