1997 Chevrolet Cavalier Questions & Answers
1997 Chevy Cavalier. How do I bypass the anti-theft system forever?
Question edited for clarity and correct name of vehicle.
You can't bypass it Cherie, it involves transponder chips, receivers and the engine computer (ECM).. The anti-theft system is there to stop theft of the vehicle, basically what you are trying to do. You have to fix the system, not find a way around it. This is the reset. As long as you battery is good and fully charged, it should only need doing once.
Just leave the key in the run position and the "Theft System " light on the dash will be flashing. Leave the key on for about 10 minutes and the light will stop flashing and go on solid. Then the theft system is disable

How to change cv joints
I would replace the complete axle assembly,it would be cheaper and come with a warranty.Instructions- Remove the CV Joint
- Pull the CV joint assembly from the interconnecting shaft to force the snap ring at the top of the shaft through the CV joint assembly.
- Tilt the inner cage (the cage holding the balls in place inside the housing) in different angles to remove the six balls. Use your thumb or a hammer and a wooden dowel, if necessary.
- Tilt the inner cage enough to remove it from its housing.
- Rotate the race inside the cage--the part that holds the balls against the inner cage--and remove the race from the cage.Replace the CV Joint
- Apply a thick coat of grease to the new CV joint race using special high temperature/high pressure grease (see Tips below).
- Install the race inside the new cage. Then install the cage/race assembly inside the CV joint housing.
- Tilt the cage at different angles and fit the new balls in place.
- Slide a new CV joint rubber boot over the interconnecting shaft.
- Install a new snap and stop ring on the interconnecting shaft.
- Push the interconnecting shaft through the CV joint assembly to force the snap ring through the assembly.
- Apply a thick coat of CV joint grease to all moving parts of the assembly.
- Apply a coat of CV joint grease to the inside of the rubber boot. Then slide the boot over the CV joint assembly.
- Install the boot straps at each end of the boot, and tighten the straps using a clamp tool or screwdriver, depending on the type of clamp.

ETS OFF warning light and
The ETS light comes on usually in responce to a cooling system problem in Cavaliers. The first thing to do is check your fuses. The Check Engine light always comes on when the ETS light comes on. You need to be concerned with this ETS system first. Usually it is your 30 amp fuse that needs to be replaced. On most cav's the fuse box us under your hood, on the right hand side. There are two fuses that are for the coolent system. Check these fuses first. If the fuse is blown, change it and the dash light should go out. If the fuse blows in a week or so again, then try to read the codes like the guys above say. When the fuse it out, the code reader is just going to say that you need to check your fuse. This is what happened in my
car, and my mechanic said it was pretty common in these cars. Good luck.
96 chevy beretta 2.2 no
If you are getting the signal from the PCM to the DIS module, but the coils are not firing, that would be what I would look at.
Anti theft reset
Crankshaft position sensor most likely or camshaft sensor also depends on type of vehicle could vary if acura most likely ignition switch.
Does it die when actually driving down street or only when starting?
What's year make and model and engine size ? That will help with response's to you're question
Car cranks up but wont fire
With this limited info on vehicle I would remove fuel filter and make sure your pumping fuel to start, then i would check and see if I'm getting spark thru spark plugs. Would help to scan vehicle to look for codes that could point you in the right direction
Misfire, idles high
I would start with ect. That is the engine coolant temperature (sensor). That sensor monitors the coolant temp and tells the computer to increase engine RPM so the engine warms up faster. In the mornings when you first start your car and it idols high, that sensor is sending that information. If you have a code for this sensor start there.
