Right rear wheel does not move when car is put into drive

  • Anonymous Jun 24, 2012

Thank you Hector for giving me a possible solution, however the ER brake is not on. When I put the car in drive and try to move the car either way, all of the other tires will move, but the rt rear wheel seems like it is locked somehow. The car will go forward and backward, but with the rt rear wheel does not move.

Are the brakes/parking brakes locked up?

  • Hector L. Morales Jun 24, 2012

Not asking if they are engaged I'm asking if they are lock up? It is possible that the cable for that side is frozen or the caliper is staying engaged. Lift the rear of the car safely and see if you can turn the rear wheels by hand if not check the caliper if you have disc brakes in the rear if you got drums they could also be over adjusted.

SOURCE: when i put my car in drive the rear right wheel makes a scrubbin

i had the same problem and i ended up changing the rear wheel bearings and axels, look under the car near the rear wheel seals, if they are leaking the axels are going to be worn also and need replacing.

Need to take rear driveline out of 1998 chevy blazer

By removing the drive line you may move the car but it will lock up on you at some point,, the rear end, wheel bearing or broken axel will cause more damage, just tear into it and fix the problem before it causes you more trouble.....Hope that helps...

Rear end noise when driving 2006 nissan altima

Your car has no "rear end" as people used to call them.
The "rear end" was a set of gears on the old rear wheel drive vehicles that put power to the back wheels.
Since you have a front wheel drive car, the problem you have is much easier to diagnose and repair.
You very likely have a bad rear wheel bearing or two on one side.
A way to tell is to spin the rear wheels one at a time and compare how much noise they make.
The bad one should be noisy.
I cannot think of any easy way to spin the rear wheels one at a time.
Perhaps using a "mechanic's stethoscope" might help.
Raise the car safely up in the air, crawl under the car, and place a long screwdriver tip against the center of the inside of the axle under the car where the wheel bearing are.
If you can't imagine where to put the screwdriver, get someone who knows to help you.
Put the handle in to your ear, and have someone spin the wheel by hand.
One should be noisier than the other.
Be blessed.

My rear wheels are getting hot when driving. Put new wheel cylinders, shoes, adjusters, and spring kit on. Go to take off on a hill and car will not roll. Any solution

Tires naturally get hot while driving ... Wheels too, naturally get hot while driving. You cant move after replacing the rear brakes? Loosen them up a little - they are too tight. Brakes too get hot and will 'swell' due to the heat.

I suggest you back off the adjusters at least 4 to 6 clicks.

You did put everything back together properly, right?

Thanks for your question @ FixYa.com

As this car IS a FRONT wheel drive, that is switchable to four wheel drive (it switches off at 21 mph)if when you switch to 4wd and your fronts have no drive, the drive automatically goes to the wheels with traction(rear)try putting the rears on wet grass and see if you move when you hit the gas........hard.

How do I determine if the rear wheel bearings are the problem on my 95 camaro.

Hi there,
first thing you'll have to jack the rear wheels and put the car on axle stands both sides.
Put some good wheel chokes in front and make sure the car is sitting nice on the stands.
Check for any excess play at the wheel hub by moving it side ways and up & down.
Now start the car, put it in drive and let the wheel turn and carefully put your hand on the rear suspension and feel if you sense any "rough" noise or humming noise. This is how you can diagnose the rear wheel bearings.
Cheers
