I was driving on the high way at about 55mph and accelerated to pass and overcome the vehicle in the exit lane. As I pressed the accelerator my check engine light and my ETS (electronic traction system) light came on simultaneously. I cannot tell in degradation in engine or transmission performance. I feel it must be an issue with the ETS. The most important question of this issue is, can the failure of this system cause more major problems?
SOURCE: ETS OFF light always on
Theres a rocker switch labeled "trac control" on the left of the steering column switch it one way to turn traction control on and the other way to turn it off, either way it wont harm anything. GM designed a glorious "Traction Control System", the purpose of which is unknown. What is known however, is that this system has broken on all Achievas known to be in existance. As you will notice if you follow the advice above, activating the system causes any number of problems, many of which are dangerous. Naturally, rather than take any action to fix the problem, GM has tacitly advised dealers to merely turn the switch to off. (The fact that there even is a switch suggests that the system never worked, and indeed was never intended to.) Dealers typically then advice foolish consumers that the light "is meant to be off", which means they think Achieva drivers are among the dumbest people in America.
SOURCE: does not accelerate
Have the mechanics check the throttle position sensor. Mine did this from the day I bought it and the fix was a $140 plastic piece (the throttle position sensor) which tells the computer how much gas and air to mix in the combustion chambers

One or more of the engine electrical plugs is now wet and shorting out the circuits.
Without taking each and every plug apart and drying with a hair dryer,,you are just going to have to wait this one out.

Change your idle control sensor, but first make sure your throttle linkage isn't sticking.
SOURCE: engine makes a loud noise when you accelerate
sorry tac22,you don't. there is no dip stick .apparently, they don't want (or need)us bothering with that! i asked my dealer the same question and he said i didn't need to worry about the trans fluid. if you have transmission problems then have a "qualified technician"service it,but apparently,it is "maintainance-free". hope that helps!
