1989 Jaguar Vanden Plas - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
Curcuit failure
This is a very rare problem and I haven't encountered it before. I do know that you should confirm no fuses are burnt out, if they are check the wiring to the seat belts for wear that may be touching metal. Get yourself a factory wiring diagram d repair manual as well so you can track down the wiring for the systems components. Since this isn't a USA model I don't know where you can get repair manuals for it on line, we use a site called
www.alldata.com here, it may have your model you would need to check, they charge to access the manuals in pdf but it is cheap compared to what even a used one costs if you can find one out there. Also try eBay.

Backlights wont work, something electrical
dear www_tattoop,
Firstly I would like to ask you if you have checked the fuses in the fuse box to make sure these are not blown, the fusebox for the car should be either under the drivers' steering wheel or by the passengers, footwell. Some cars have them under the bonnet, so its best to check these locations and the fuses, if not, then it is going to be a question of testing and replacing the bulbs. Are the backlights in question for your speedometer and gauges? If so, this is probably going to be a problematic job, but if you can supply me more information, then I should be able to solve this for you
Look forward to hearing from you soon
Yours sincerely
Oz

I need a gas tank
I would try to call around to some junkyards. I know a Jag usually doesn't stay there very long or even at all, but it is a way to find a tank. Those that are junked don't come in because of a bad gas tank. You can also call a Jaguar dealer and they might be able to help you more. You may also be able to try their website. As far as the junkyards, you can pull them up on Google Maps and there are a lot of listings, depending where you live of course. If you need anything else, let me know. I am here to help. Thanks for using FixYa.

I HAVE A 1989 JAGUAR VANDEN PLAS DRIVEING FOWARD
Your going to have to have the transmission checked and repaired. There is a pin inside the transmission that can only be accessed when it is dis-assembled and that has sheared off or there solenoid has faulted inside the transmission. I know this is not good news but that is the truth of the matter.

How do i remove console ?
You would be better off having someone familiar with this car do this as the radio cover, console veneer, concole ashtray and console finisher have to be removed to get to th forward retaining screws. Then unclip rear air distrobution box and unplug cigar lighter remove rear securing screw. Unplug security electrical connecter and fuse box harness. pull towards rear to remove. Good Luck.

Jaguar xj6 break light cancels signal
Replace the turn signal switch. Bad contact inside causing a crossing of the circuits. When the turn signal is applied it should open the brake light circuit allowing for just the signal to work. Doesn't sound like the switch is doing it's job.

Bulb failures with no real pattern
check the front and rear turn signal and brake bulbs ,check for filament wear or drakness in bulb glass.if this is found replace bulb, you may also have a bad ground to a bulb socket, turn lights on (signal and break) and wiggle wires at bulb socket, watch light, if it dim any replace that socket and check the ground wire.

How do I replace the fuel pump on a 1989 vanden
it is underneath at the rear driver side wheel. remove the wheel. disconnect the battery. disconnect the wires to the pump...usually blue. Connections to the pump from the tank and out from the pump are more complicated. Change the fuel filter at the same time. You will need to clamp the fuel line and you will spill some gas no matter what. It is awkward to do it on your back and well worth an hour of a mechanic's time...but it is do-able

1989 jaguar xj6 new engine or new cylinder???
At that price replace the engine. Make sure though that you get a warranty for the engine that includes the cost of installation if the new one fails. Most shops will warranty for 90 days which is long enough to find out if there is going to be a problem.
