1997 Oldsmobile Regency Questions & Answers
Sometime my gas hand works and sometimes it doesn't what can i do
several possibilities. Todays gas is prone to gum up if not used up within a month or so, and if it does, it can cause the sender unit in the tank to stick. More likely, though, is a poor electrical connection, either in the dash cluster where the main harness plugs in, or in any one of the several connectors between the dash and the tank. The gauge itself can have a cracked wire, and older cars had an instrument cluster voltage regulator but I think they stopped doing that. Not much help I guess, but the idea is you must run some tests. When the gauge is not working, you can find the wire going to the sender and short it to ground. If the gauge rises the sender is probably the problem (unless the tank is empty, lol). If the gauge doesn't move, either it has failed or the power going to it has failed. Really simple circuit= 12+ to one side of gauge and other wire to sender which is a variable ground.
Front end shakes while driving
Well, if one of the tire balancing weights has been thrown off the tire, the tire will be imbalanced and that will show up when you drive the car. If not that then there is something seriously wrong with the front end of car.
U can try putting the front tires on the rear. If that clears it up, at least you know it is not the front end and there is a tire balancing issue. If it still does it , better have that front end checked out asap.
Which line on the radiator of a 1997 oldsmobile regency sedan is the outlet?
Top hose is input from the engine and bottom hose is output from the radiator. The engine heats up and the thermostat opens allowing coolant out of the engine through the top hose and into the radiator. The coolant flows down through the radiator out the bottom hose, into the water pump and back into the engine.
What cause it to use too much fuel
check the easy things first, air filter clean and no restriction on air getting to it,temperature staying normal on a run once warmed up(gauge dropping cold when driving indicates a thermostat stuck open),tyre pressures correct, alignment correct(see tyre edge wear to determine if out),no brake drag-wheels jacked off the ground should spin easily(auto trans in neutral-engine off-safely braced),sparkplugs worn or gap incorrect/ wrong grade, oxygen sensor faulty(will need to be checked by tech with a data reader), oil way past service due, timing out, if engine on carburettor(should be injected though)choke stuck closed. Just work through the easy steps first as they can all add up to fuel excess
Diagnostic code p0171
Type: OBD PO171
That is how you look up codes
Won't be flooding it is fuel injected
That code won't cause a starting issue, just
a slight lack of performance & some control
over fuel trim
How do i know if i need a tdm
An employee of GM once told me that the security light will stay on solid instead of flashing if it's a TDM issue.

Car won"t start
An engine needs 3 essential things to operate;Spark, fuel, and compression.Determine if you are getting spark from your spark plugs, determine if you are getting fuel by smelling the spark plug center electrode for a fuel odor.compression can be tested by doing a leak down test in tune with each of the cylinders.good luck!
