The laptop switches on but then screen stays blank. Caps lock and next to ' Altec Lansing' logo flashes white light. Otherwise nothing seems alive.

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. It would seem that your BIOS has become corrupted somehow. First try entering your BIOS setup. I believe for HP computers when you press power tap the F10 key until it opens. There you can try to reset them in some fashion and save. Try rebooting. If that fails then remove the battery and repeatedly press the power button for about 10 seconds.. (make sure it is also unplugged, this is to discharge the power from the system) then replace the battery and try booting again. Otherwise it would seem that you might have tried to load the wrong BIOS into your laptop. Check with HP then if you are still covered or not. :/
is the acer still covered by the warranty? you can get it repaired for free if it is, its a common fault with these, my friend over here in finland has one of those and it did the same thing, he got it replaced / fixed for free since it was under warranty. get yours fixed also.
that light is your number lock indicator simply press the num lock key it will go off push it again it comes back on however when the light is off your number pad will disable and you will have to input numbers using your top row on your kepad I just leave it on I like the number pad and use it alot
