Our new home has a GE XL44 gas stove the top works fine but when I use the oven it smokes and sets off the smoke alarms. The stove is over 3 years old Any ideas before I have to call the repairman in?

A gas stove shouldn't smoke. Is is clean? There is some grease that has eluded your cleaning efforts of interior surface?

Here are some tips that may help you resolve this problem:

Check the broiler flame. If the broiler flame is not adjusted properly, you could be creating soot from the burner flame.

Position the items that your are broiling lower so that they do not splatter grease up onto the broiler baffle.

Use a broiler pan that will drain grease and drippings down below the top surface.

Broiling many items will naturally produce some smoke. If you have the oven door closed when broiling then the only place that the smoke can go is up and out of the oven vent. If you partially open the oven door, some of the smoke will come out of the door opening.

You may have residue on the top walls of the inner oven cavity. Do you have self-clean feature on your range to clean the oven? Follow all of the procedures in your owner's manual to properly clean the oven using the self-clean cycle. This may clear out any undetected residue that could be causing excessive smoke during broiling.

Why is this model smoking so much when you use the oven why is so hard to clean the upper part the element is in the way and it is almost impossible to clean it

smoking ovens is from burnt on grease where people do not use oven bags to prevent grease spatter
get advice on how to remove the element and replace with a new one ( grease free) use a good quality spray on oven cleaner and let stand for the directed time then clean out properly refit the new element
it will be best if you remove the door first as it makes it easier to get in the oven

Whirlpool self cleaning oven super capacity 465

If there is a lot of grease it may be good to wipe the excess out. The excess grease could ignite if not it can sure smoke up the house.

MY OVEN HAS GREASE SPILLAGE IN THE BOTTOM. I WAS BAKING AND IT STARTED TO SMOKE. I want to remove the grease first before I start the self cleaning. What should I use to best remove the grease without...

best way to loosen grease in the oven area is to place an oven safe pan with some water in it and run the oven at 200 degrees for thirty minutes. This help in the removal grease without using anything but water.

Smoke coming from electric oven element

if it is the upper element is smoking when in use then its usuall grease/fatty deposits that have attached itself from previous cooks.. the only way to rid is to open doors & windows then turn to max temp to burn off... 5-10 mins usually suffice dependant on quantity. looks bad initially but soon it will be heating clean again..

Smoking Fan Assisted Oven

Is the smell a food smell or other smell. If it is food, then some food has gotten behind the blower motor. Clean behind it good. Even some small particles have gotten in there somehow. You can also feel thye sufaces of the oven and tell if there is some buildup.

Kenmore 665.95029100 smokes (a lot) during self-clean mode. Have you ever heard of this?

Yes, you will get a lot of smoke if you have either waited too long to clean the oven or something has spilled in the oven and it was not wiped up in time. There is supposed to be a "smoke eliminator" element in the vent for self clean, if that element fails it can cause problems, but failure of the smoke eliminator is rare. Your issue may simply be that you need to run the clean cycle more frequently. You might have to put up with it once more and clean it up and then subsequent cleanings will not be as "smoky".

I hope this helps.

Oven smokes

If it smoke smells of burnt food or grease you have something on the surface of the element which is burning off.

If it is an acrid smoke it could be the element itself is on the way out or the fan (if it is a fan oven).

You need to make a visual check of the element/fan to ascertain their condition and clean or replace as necessary.

I have alot of smoke when i use the self cleaning feature

Self cleaning works by 'burning' all of the material it is cleaning.  If you have excessive grease other material in the oven, it will cause the smoking.  Either do the cycle more frequently or remove as much of the goo as possible with a cloth before beginning.  If you have a ventilator to the outside, turn it on and close the door to the kitchen to contain the odor.
