I have a dc5100 sff and legacy drivers. The device manager is saying that the device is working properly but still no sound if I try to play a cd, dvd, or music from my external hardrive. Even if I go through the windows media player it gives me and error message that either don't have a sound card or another program is using it.

All you will need to do is download and reinstall your audio drivers.
Head over to the HP downloads center to download the latest audio driver for your PC.
Once it is downloaded, install it and reboot your system.

AS you state the "device is working properly" so it must be something else.
Try playing a music CD and if the music looks as if it is playing, it probably is and there is a mechanical problem with the headphone socket or the volume is not activated.
Check the Mixer Console by r/hand mouse click the loudspeaker icon and select Volume mixer.
Hope that fixes it

I have a sound related problem and do not know how to solve

Can you play audio files even if there's no sound with the Windows Media Player? if so some files of the sound driver is missing, you need to update the sound driver. Or if you can't play, then there's no sound driver only the codec is present without the device driver, the process is more or less the same..but before you follow these steps, put the Motherboard Driver CD on the CD Rom: Right Click on My Computer - Manage - Device Manager - Right click on the Yellow icon - Update Driver - No, Not this time - Next - Install from a list or Specific location - Next - Tick the "Include this Location in the Search - Browse - Go to the CD Rom Directory and search the Driver/Audio folder - and Select the Audio Driver folder - click OK- Next - Finish.. done..... Good luck.. Do let me know if this doesn't solve your problem, i am ready to help you..

Go to your CONTROL PANEL

First tab GENERAL shows if device is working properly
Click on DRIVER to update/check on drivers, if you need drivers, it will search and locate them for you.

Sound card problem.

Open the Device Manager, click on the icon, which is marked with question mark, hit delete button then a prompt will pop-up then hit Yes. After a while or after Windows restart, it will prompt you that you need to install driver for a new hardware, I assume you still have the Drivers CD, which comes with your PC, dictate the PC to search driver from the CD or DVD drive. This should do the trick. if you still have further inquiries or if still this doesn't work, please post another thread.
