Hmm the lid has a little pin that goes down by the power switch when closed. Theres a little switch right behind the power switch that the pin hits for the ps2 to know the lids closed. IF you take it apart look at that piece. It might just be a little out of place.

My PS2 slim wont spin a disc it takes you to the game settings but nothing else

Well has it been dropped? If so more then likely the guide rail fall out of place and can easily be poped back in place. A good way to see if its your laser or guide rail is to fined the hole that when the lids closed this pin goes in the hole so the ps2 knows the lids closed and stick a piece of paper in that hole with lid opened. Now it should act like the lids closed. See if the laser produces a red beam or strange noises. Maybe even the little black piece at the back that stops the disc from spinning isnt working right. But dont get worried as theres a pin on the lid that makes the black piece pull back from the disc when lids closed so it might be stopping disc from spinng while its open. Several diffrent solutions need to know how you know its not spinning. If your just putting your head to it and cant hear it spinning then you will need to trouble shoot.

My son tripped over our friends ps2 and it fell to the floor upside down. The PS2 goes but the drive does not go.Any ideas how to fix this problem" Thanks

There are quite a few things that can cause a disc read error on the slim PS2. The most frequent is a bad laser, however, here is some useful troubleshooting info:

1. "Lid Closed Sensors" There are two "lid closed sensors" in the slim PS2. In a fall, it's possible that one or both have become damaged. Remove the top of the PS2 and try depressing both sensors with a game inside. The laser should move up and down at least???

IF YES, try again with the lid on... if the laser doesn't move when you close the lid, then the top casing of your PS2 cracked in the fall and is no longer depressing the lid closed sensors.

==> If the laser moves up and down OK but does not read discs, your laser was damaged in the fall. See below for a website with more troubleshooting info, pictures, and replacement cases and lasers.

IF NO, you have a bad lid closed sensor -- these are not really replaceable easily -- you may be better off replacing the whole PS2 if one or both of these lid closed sensors goes bad.

Disc wont spin

There are 4 reasons a disc won't spin on the Slim PSP. The most common is a failed laser.

1. Failed laser -- the disc will not spin up to speed, or not spin at all, due to a bad laser. If you close the PS2 with no disc inside, the ps2 will never spin the disc. If you chose the PS2 with a disc inside but a bad laser, it still thinks no disc is inside and will not spin.

2. Lid closed sensors. There are two of them. One on the motherboard and one on the reset switch. These sensors let the PS2 know that the lid is closed. If one or both of these break, the disc will never spin because the PS2 will think the lid is still open.

3. Damaged case. If the case of the PS2 is damaged, the two parts of the lid that are supposed to press the lid-closed sensors will never press them.

Looks like the disk isnt spinning - any ideas what to do?

Yes. There are three reasons why your Slim PS2 disc might not spin.

1. Bad laser. This is the most common issue.
2. Bad case: if your PS2 dropped or is banged around a lot, the case could become loosely closed and even though it is closed, the PS2 thinks it is still open.
3. Bad sensor(s): The PS2 has 2 sensors to let it know that the lid is closed. Once the lid is closed, the laser does its thing.

The website above shows you how to check for these problems, and sells parts to fix them all. They also do repairs.

Disk not spinning but spins when pressed .

Sounds like the lid of your PS2 may be damaged. If holding down the top starts a game up, but the PS2 will not start up by itself, something is preventing the case from holding down the switch on the motherboard that lets the PS2 know that the lid is closed.

Check out the website above for some troubleshooting info and a new lid, if you need it.

Ps2 Disk won't spin unless pressure applied

i had the same problem and i could fix it.

but you i'll have to open your ps2, and then you will notice a little black switch in the on the top of link image:
http://www.richspsxparts.com/howto/lidclosed.jpg

now, open the switch (you i'll see a little wire metal inside) clean the inside part of the switch, and "bend" a little ( til you can make sure that will make contact when the lid is closed) and then close the switch.

sorry for my bad english. =P

i hope this help.
