Option 1: Check your audio settings on your camcorder. You may have an option to zoom in on the sound or record sound all around you. Try switching between either of those and see if that helps.
Option 2: Add an external microphone
Option 3: Try to muffle (lightly cover up) your onboard mic to keep the loud sounds from auto adjusting the volume.
To start ensure that you removed the cover from the lens.
Also remove battery and put it back in place to reset the camcorder.
If you get only sound on playback, connect the camera to a computer or TV, or play the tape on a different camera.
If you get picture in there, then the camcorder is recording, but the video playback does not work because of a faulty LCD display.
If when you play back the movie on a different camera, or using the compute you still get no picture then the camcorder is faulty.
Faults that can cause black screen can be:

Place camera in record mode. Push in on the center of the joystick (round disk that changes modes ). Circle w/icons appears. Looks like a shoe at the top and arrow on left. Push joy stick to left - shows fade on - push to left again and it says off! Push the center of the joystick and the circle disappears and mode is changed. Good luck! PTL Praise The Lord as my Mother would say. I just figured it out myself!! This works for Panasonic mini DV digital camcorder. Hope it does for you too. It's worth a try.
