Press and hold down the "Enter" and "*" keys on the printer's control panel, and turn the printer back on.
Hold the "Enter" and "*" keys until you see the "Permanent Storage Init" message on the device control panel. Release the two keys to perform the NVRAM initialization. The NVRAM initialization takes just a few seconds, and the "Permanent Storage Init" message remains on the printer's display until the initialization is complete.
Ensure that the "Ready" message on the printer's control panel is visible. You can now connect the printer to your computer and print your documents. If the "Ready" message is not displayed and your printer is still stuck in a loop, turn off the printer and contact HP customer support (see Resources).
To reset an HP 2840 from your computer, open the HP Toolbox program, click "Device Settings," click "Service," click "Restore" in the Resets section and then click "OK" to confirm the action and restore the printer to its factory defaults.
There may be a defect in the toner cartridge causing the odd behavior. You can try resetting the printer settings to factory default or upgrading the firmware. You can reset the settings through the printer's menu. The link below should allow you to download the latest firmware and it should provide instructions for performing the update.
HP recommended checks: 1. adequate 120 VAC power supply, 2. Remove Fuser Assembly, wait 5 minutes and then reseat. 3. Reset the printer to Factory Default settings (remember to copy down the IP address, mask and gateway numbers first).
While this may solve the problem, it is much more likely it's time to replace the fuser. Cost is approx $125 if you buy it online. Just do a Google search on HP 2840 fuser.
The problem is Vista. I had a similar problem and the only solution at the time was to remove vista and install good old reliable XP. Now just put windows 7 on and you should be ok.
We would like to inform you that the error you are getting is not because of the printer driver installed on your computer but due to the USB speed setting on the computer.

Please perform the following steps on the printers control panel. a)Press the Menu button. b)Press 2 on your keypad and then you will see Secondary Service/Service Reports. c)Press the right arrow button until High Speed USB appears. d)Press the Enter button. e)Press the right arrow button until OFF appears. f)Press the Enter button. Print something from the computer to test for the issue. The first print after performing the steps will take a little time to print but the remaining page will print in the normal speed. Selection to turn off high speed USB clears out the memory and next print jobs works better, because the memory is no longer fragmented. 3. If the error persists, please perform the below steps: NOTE: If possible, print a configuration page and menu map prior to performing a cold reset. This will document the current settings for later reference as performing factory default settings will clear all the information stored in the printer. Perform the following steps to restore the factory defaults using the device control panel. a)Press the Menu button on the device control panel. b)Use the < (Left Arrow) or > (Right Arrow) button to select Service, and then press the Enter button. c)Use the < (Left Arrow) or > (Right Arrow) button to select Restore Defaults, and then press the Enter button. The device setting will revert back to the factory default settings and the device will restart.
well........ first of all it depends on the Operating System on you computer, then starting from there the advice that i can give you it is to fully uninstall the software and then install the software back using the version that is on hp.com
after that when you have the full sw installed you have to set up the scan button on the printer from the twain scan window but that will be a piece of cake. just make sure ot get the software properly installled.
