The memory should be DDR II Ram. To find how much ram you have simply click on Start then right click on "My Computer" and click properties. Chances are you have 512 ram. It will tell you in the lower right hand side along with your processer and windows version. Once you have found out how much ram you have, turn off your computer flip it upside down and pull out the battery. Then you should see a cover with one or two screws in it that measures about 3 inch by 4 inch. Remove the screws and take the cover off. This is where your memory goes. If there is 512 memory in your computer you will either have 1 512 memory stick or 2 256 sitcks. Remember that any time you upgrade memory it is best to take out the old memory and replace with either one stick of higher ram or two of equal ram. Never mis a 512 and a 256 or 512 and 1gig ect. Take the ram stick/sticks out and bring them down to the store with you just so as to get the correct memory. Also, remember when you replace the memory, if you are just upgrading to one 1gig stick to put it in the A DIMM slot. This is the primary ram slot.

Will Medion MD-1704 support 1 x 1gb memory module or must it be 2 x 512mb

Yes you can use 1 x 1GB and all the specs I see on your system show that you can actually upgrade to 2GB of RAM 2 x 1GB PC 2700.

Just make sure that you don't get an off-brand that will not be compatible with your motherboard.

Here is a site that I use to check on some of my clients pc's to see what is compatible or not

Medion ram upgrade

I'm not a guru, but your predicament is pretty simple.
Depending on your OS (XP 32 bit, XP 64 bit, Vista), the OS will be able to recognize a certain amount of RAM. XP 64 Bit will be able to recognize up to 6GB of RAM. Vista, I have no Idea. 32 Bit, what you're seeing right now.

Sorry for wasting a bit of money on that last stick.
