Windows\system32\config\system file is missing or corrupt

Step 1:
SP3 is the third and final service pack released for Microsoft Windows XP, and it eliminates many of the security holes that previously affected XP. While Microsoft recommends that users download SP3 using Windows Update, some users are unable to do so. However, it's easy to create a Windows XP SP3 installation CD; it requires only that you download the pack from the website and burn it to a CD-R/DVD-R using an ISO burner program.
Download the SP3 installation ISO by visiting the first link listed in the "Resources" section of this article. Save it to your Desktop. Download ImgBurn and save it to your Desktop. Double-click the installation executable for ImgBurn and click "Next." Follow the remaining onscreen prompts and click "Finish" to complete installation of ImgBurn. Insert a blank CD-R/DVD-R into your DVD drive. Open ImgBurn by going to "Start," "Programs" and "ImgBurn." Click "File," then "Browse for a source file." Navigate to your Desktop and select the SP3 ISO file. Click "Open." Click the blue "ISO to CD" button located on the bottom left of ImgBurn. The program will begin creating the Windows XP SP3 installation CD. This process may take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes to complete depending on the speed at which the CD-R/DVD-R is being burned. Click "OK" once the CD-R/DVD-R has finished burning. You've successfully created a Windows XP SP3 installation CD.

On March 6, 2008 Microsoft released Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP. Service Pack 3 contains all of the important Windows updates from previous service packs as well as additional updates that were released after Service Pack 2. To install Windows XP Service Pack 3 from the Internet on a home desktop computer use the Windows Update feature. CAUTION: If you have an HP Pavilion, HP Media Center or Compaq Presario desktop computer that has an AMD processor, your PC might encounter a startup problem after installing SP3 (or SP3 will not download from Windows Update). Before attempting to install SP3, install sp37394 - Microsoft Windows XP SP3 Upgrade Utility for systems with AMD processors . Messanger Failure while loading Media Center Setup Wizard

SP3 issue. you can uninstall SP3 and then hide it so that you will continue to receive other updates. Every 2 weeks you should unhide it and try another install. If problem persists you may need to reinstall OS from disk. Follow directions closely so that you won't loose any files.

HP Media Center m1195c PC

It's a rather indepth process and is usually just easier to replace the computer.  Motherboards have many different adapters / slots / options.  If you're meaning to replace the motherboard and processor cpu, it'd be best to buy a package deal from newegg / tigerdirect / etc.  To be able to use your other components, you'd have to make sure the new motherboard has the same type memory slots, video card slot, etc.

Remote desktop connection

It sounds like you had a pre-release version of RDC 6.1 installed which you should have uninstalled before installing SP3.

Check this out - under "Remote Desktop Connection" you might find the solution you're looking for.
