This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Look in the section for the motor, pump gearcase and you'll see the Motor Coupler.

Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive washers use a "Motor Coupler" between the motor and transmission.

It's used as a fail safe device and consists of three parts.

Two of the parts are the same, plastic units with three prongs that fit on one of the motor output shafts and the other on the transmission input shaft. Between them is a rubber piece with six holes.

The power from the motor is transmitted through the rubber piece to the transmission.

The other shaft on the motor directly drives the pump. This is likely why the machine drains.

If the motor coupler is broken, or worn, the motor may not be able to send full power to the transmission for agitating or spinning.

See the following for how to remove the cabinet, pump, motor and motor mounting plate to inspect and replace the motor coupler.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

If the coupler looks damaged, it's a relatively easy fix.

Pry the plastic pieces from the motor and transmission. Some people use a claw hammer but I've found that using a small (6 inch) pry bar works well.

Carefully fit the plastic pieces over the motor and transmission shafts and press them in place (Use a 1/2" of larger socket to put pressure equally around the pieces.

Put the rubber piece on the transmission plastic piece.

Replace the motor mounting plate.

Carefully line up the plastic prongs on the motor based plastic piece to the three un-used holes in the rubber piece. If they don't line up right, the coupler could be damaged.

Mount the motor, don't forget the two screws, put the pump back on the motor and use its' clips.

Put the cabinet back on, don't forget to plug the lid switch back in and re-mount the console.

My Beko washing machine has a smell of melted rubber and I found black bits on the drum. None of the clothes have been damaged but they do smell a bit. Is it overheating or something?

hi Alyson.
this is what i found on the internet.
WHAT'S CAUSING A BURNING SMELL IN YOUR WASHING MACHINE? If you notice a burning smell in your washing machine, the cause could be any number of things. Regardless, this is one smell you shouldn't ignore. It's important to quickly diagnose the problem and find the solution.
The Burning Belt Smell Many top loaders are direct drive. This means they do not use a belt. The motor is directly connected to the transmission.
In Whirlpool and Kenmore models there is a rubber coupler between the motor and transmission that takes much abuse. It's very common for the fingers or the rubber itself on the coupler to break. A clicking noise with no spin or agitation along with a slight rubber smell are symptoms of this problem.?DIY repair is possible. Older models may also have belts that can be tighted or replaced
The new Whirlpool or Maytag washer can often be fixed without calling for repair.
To work on a top load HE washer pull the empty unit away from the wall. Drape a small rug or towel over the control to minimize damage to the wall and the panel. Lean the unit against the wall and the bottom will be clearly visible. Lie on the floor and note if there are rubber pieces or shavings under the washer. The belt may be rubbing against a plastic guard attached to the motor. The solution is actually quite simple: If the belt is shredded or worn you need to replace it. You can call a repair person or, if your washer is under warranty, the manufacturer. Or, if you or someone you know is handy, you can do it yourself!
Electrical Problems If your washer smells. The first thing to do if you notice an electrical smell in your washing machine and not a rubber burning smell, is to unplug the machine and call the manufacturer or a repair person.
An electrical burning smell may also be caused by a water leak coming into contact with electrical wiring. Both are major concerns and should be addressed immediately. A water leak can cause structural damage in your home and can short out the electrical wiring in your washer and cause additional damage to the machine.

Other Causes

Another more likely cause of a burning smell in your washer is overloading. Adding too many clothes to your washing machine can stress the motor or transmission, causing them to overheat or malfunction and emit a burning smell. For top load washers, overloading can cause the agitator to freeze or malfunction, stressing the drive belt and causing friction, which could emit a burning rubber smell.
To prevent overloading, know the size of your washer. They are measured in cubic feet. In addition, know how many towels, pants, shirts, and other items you can safely load. When it doubt, do smaller loads. Not only will this prevent overstressing the machine, it will also ensure clothes are thoroughly cleaned and rinsed.

Getting a smell out of a kenmore front loading washing machine

If you have a smelly front loading clothes washing machine, toss in a Finish Geltabs (the ones that are all liquid) and run the machine on a hot wash cycle, medium to heavy load (to get more water in the tub) with no clothes in the machine. You don't need to use much of a spin cycle so set it on low. The washing machine will come clean and even the moldy spots on the rubber gaskets will disappear. A second treatment may be needed if the smell is not completely gone. We tried everything from vineger to bleach to baking soda to borax to commercially available odor removers from Whirlpool and Tide. Nothing worked until I hit on this idea. It's cheap, easy and can be done anytime your machine needs a refreshing. I used the orange Geltabs but any fragrance would be fine. Keep the door on your washer open a bit when possible to air out to help preclude thiose nasty smells.

Washing machine spins slowly and smells of burning rubber

The belt could be worn and will be slipping on the pullys, as it spins up the rubber , rubs against the pullys and that is what creats the burning rubber smell, the belt needs replacing.

Frigidare top loading washer 6 cycle - 10 years old

you may want to inspect the bottom part and see if it still uses fan belt. it could be that the belt is loose and the motor is spinning but can not drive the transmission. so the rubber burning smell is coming from the slipping belt.

the solution is to tighten the belt or replace it if necessary.
