Ethernet connection My ethernet connection will not work. I have a netgear wireless router that works perfectly fine when connecting ethernet cabled devices. However when I plug the ethernet cable from my wireless router to my HP2575 printer there is no activity (No lights) that appear on either router or printer connection ports. Could this be a fault of the printer as I would expect at least a light if anything from either router or printer if there was communication going on between the pair?

Hello Becky

There could be a security feature on the printer that requires that you enable the Ethernet port at the printer's control panel 1st. I've seen this w/ printers and All-In-Ones that have a wireless-capable.

HERE is a link to HP's info, downloads, FAQs, etc on this printer.

Depending upon your LAN configuration (on the router), you may need to at least change the subnet mask on the printer if not assign it a static IP so it doesn't conflict w/ any other devices on your LAN using DHCP. (1st, of course, you'll need to get the Ethernet port enabled on the printer)

HERE's the User Guide for your printer. Go to page 29 to find the network configuration instructions.

Please, let us know if this response was helpful for your or, of course, if you have more questions, etc on this topic.

Thank you
BJ

    Hi Becky,

Just a little information for you regarding FixYa's rating system.

When an expert provides you w/ a solution that is "right on the button" and/or takes you to the solution or it provides you w/ a means of diagnosing the cause of the problem you are experiencing, the appropriate rating to assign to his/her solution is a "FixYa" (rather than a "Helpful").

A "Helpful" rating is a positive rating also but it is more appropriate in cases where the recommendations by the expert(s) were helpful but did not, in the end, determine or definitively diagnose your issue or answer your question.

We experts here on FixYa are heavily impacted by our ratings. Our solution ratings affect our standing on FixYa and contribute to whether or not we are rated as a "Wizard", for instance, or a "Guru". These ratings, in turn, impact our levels of compensation for some types of premium support that we provide on FixYa.

So, in the end, assigning a fitting rating to a solution is really important to us.

Please, come back anytime you need help. That is what we are here for. Thank you for the positive feedback and for letting me know that your problem was resolved w/ the information I was able to provide to you. That's always a warm and fuzzy that we geeks live for. At least I do! :)

Thank you again for coming to FixYa for help w/ your problem.

    Be Well,

    BJ

    Hello Becky,

Once again, I'm delighted my solution provided the assistance and support you needed.

I do have a small favor to ask of you. Would you, kindly, take just a moment to change your rating of my solution to a "FixYa"? I would be most grateful if you wouldn't mind. :)

(I only just learned that Askers were allowed to do this if they chose to (re-rate a solution))

Thank you again for using FixYa!

I have the RCA DCM425C cable modem and also Vonage phone service. So my modem ethernet connects to my Vonage internet. I would like to go wireless in my house. How would I do this?

You would connect from the output of the Vonage modem to the wireless router and then from the wireless router you can connect Ethernet to your desktop if you have one and then anything else can run off of the wireless.

or

get a wireless router / cable modem combo provided by companies such as netgear then you would connect the Vonage to the router through one of the available Ethernet ports and any other Ethernet connections to the router as well and anything else wireless would work wireless.

Trouble connecting netgear wireless router to rca modem DCM425

First try connection the Yellow ethernet cable from the rca modem to your computer's network connection. If you get a connection this way, then your modem will work with a ethernet cable. If not, then call Comcast for help. The modem ethernet out to computer port must be connected to the wan line of the router. Then you can connect an ethernet cable from your computer network connection to one of the 4 ports of the router. For wireless connections you must set up the router and wireless adaptor with the same settings to connect. Follow the routers directions.

Motorola Surfboard 4220 not working with my Netgear WGT624 router

Make sure that you have the ethernet cord from your modem plugged into the WAN/Internet port on your router. Then unplug the power cord from your cable modem and plug it right back in. After the modem fully comes back online, unplug the power cord on the wireless router and plug it back in. wait 30 - 60 sec and then try and connect.

Most cable companies only allow one active"CPE" at a time for internet access. All this means is when you change what is connected to the cable modem you must always reboot the cable modem to allow access.

Hope this helps. Let me know if it does not work.

Please rate.

Yellow Ethernet Cable

Hello,
Ethernet cables can come in all colours (very unhelpfully). The cable you need has RJ45 connectors at either end, which are clear.

It goes by many names: you are looking for Cat5e or Cat6, ‘straight’ or ‘patch’ cable, which is used to connect, say, a computer to a router. Do NOT use ‘crossover’ cable.

Netgear has some info here (a little out of date but OK:)

Wireless routers

Just plug the cable modem ethernet into the input to your router and you will be fine. Just remember, if you decide you want to make any changes to your router settings through your browser, make sure you hook up an ethernet line from your laptop to the router before making any changes. The reason for this is if you make a change in security settings on your router while wireless, the router will reboot and if your laptop did have the settings changed in it, you can be locked out.
Not that you can't get back in, but it is a pain to have to do.

Wireless router installation

Please see my response to this question. Your university's connection is most probably a LAN connection, so you'd need to follow the instructions as if you had a cable internet connection (unlike DSL, a LAN connection and cable internet connection don't require authentication with the ISP).

Server not found} NetGear WGR614 Wireless Router doesn't connect me to the internet.

Dear Loud Nouises,

Your router must be connected properly to the cable modem. This must be to the wan port on the router.

Next, the router must be set-up accordingly to recognize the modem's internet connections. Please ask for the IP address.. and other relevant informations from your internet provider.

Set -up your computer using the internet connections wizard on each of your respective computer.

This should work fine if all connections were correctly configured.
