I have the RCA DCM425C cable modem and also Vonage phone service. So my modem ethernet connects to my Vonage internet. I would like to go wireless in my house. How would I do this?

MOST OF THESE WILL WORK WATH THE VIDEO.

USB is NOT RJ45 connectors. They are very differant as in water and bar of steel.

Read backside cable connections. "ETHERNET" connect to router "Internet" connection. Plug ALL devices into "Ethernet" dump USB cable and store away. USB may shut down Ethernet connection while connected.

It should work with the Vonage hooked into the WAN port of the modem, then the router plugged into the router. I had same issue with a Belkin router. Vonage Customer Service will help you at all hours: 1-VONAGE-HELP (1-866-243-4357)

Connect the Cable Modem - > The Vonage

Then Connect the Vonage -> The Yellow or Green Slot of the router

Connect your computer -> The Grey slot in the router

Run the Setup

Plug ethernet cable from the cable modem into the router input and plug vonage ethernet cable into the router ethernet port.

First of all: it would be good to know which devices you are using. This would help to be more specific.

But anyways:

1. Connect a normal Ethernet cable from your DSL or Cable modem to the Internet (or WAN) port of your vonage router.
2. Then connect another Ethernet cable from one of theLAN ports of the vonage device to the Internet (or WAN) port of your Linksys (The one that is separated from the 4 LAN ports.)
   
3. Make sure that the Linksys is set to DHCP (Dynamic IP Address), soit can get it's IP address from the vonage router! (Look at your manual. If you don't have one, you can get it here. Choose the right version number - you can find that on a sticker at the bottom of the router - and download the user guide)
   
4. Connect your computer to one of the LAN ports on the Linksys.

Sorry but that seems to be a pretty convoluted explanation. Here is how it should go.
Vonage unit connected to phone line(s) and cable modem. Linksys connected to Vonage box. Computers connected to Linksys.
Ethernet has a length limitation of about 300 feet before you need another switch (hub) or a repeater. Does your wire length exceed this?

I will try to make this as clear as possible, but if you have nay questions, please come back here and let me know.

You will need 4 things: 1 Surfboard Modem, Wrt54G, vonage router, computer. Put them next to each other without having plugged in anything ( no ethernet, no power cable!). Make sure that the WRT54G router is back to default settings by pressing the reset button on the back of the router for 10 seconds.

1. Connect the power cable to the Modem. Power light on?
2. If yes, connect the coax cable from the wall to the modem. (The one that looks like a TV cable)
   
3. Connect the power cable to the router and wait until the power light is on steady.
4. Connect your modem to the router. Plug an ethernet cable first into the modem and THEN into the WAN port (the label says "Internet") of the router.
5. Plug an ethernet cable into one of the router LAN ports and connect it to your computer.
6. Power on the computer.
7. Open the Control panel and the Network Connections applet.
8. You should see something called "Local Area Connection".
9. Double-click on it and click the Properties button.
10. Double-click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and make sure both radio buttons are set to "Obtain...automatically".
11. Close all Windows by clicking "OK".(The second one takes a moment, because it applies the settings.)
12. In the open window choose the Support tab and you should see your IP address, your Default Gateway (192.168.1.1) and your DHCP server (192.168.1.1)
13. Open Internet Explorer and type "192.168.1.1" in the address bar.
14. If you have reset your router to factory defaults, leave the username blank and type "admin" in the password field.
15. On the first page (Setup), you should set the Internet Connection Type to "DHCP", unless you get a static IP from comcast (which i doubt).
16. Go to the Wireless tab and ensure that wireless is enabled.
17. Go to the "Security Tab - Wireless Security" and ensure that NO security is enabled for now.
18. Open a new browser window and see if you can open a web page. Use an address that is unlikely to be in cache - try "http;//www.mit.edu" or so.
    
19. Close your browser for now and come back here later to setup your wireless security etc.
20. Now power on your vonage router and wait until the power light comes on steadily.
21. Connect an ethernet cable from a LAN port of the router to the WAN port of the vonage router. (Plug it into the router first!)
22. The vonage device should blink and establish a connection (Internet light is steady on). This might take a moment, because the device is downloading the newest firmware as well.
23. Once the vonage router is on and the lights are steady (you didn't say which vonage device you have, so I can't tell how many lights there are), plug normal telephone ( not a wireless one) into the vonage router and see if you can get a call signal.
24. If you were successful - sit back for a moment, enjoy the triumph and treat yourself with a nice drink!

There are a couple of things you still have to do, but the main thing is done.

1. Make sure that you can access the internet from your wireless laptop before you start changing settings.
2. Get a manual for the router here.
   
3. Go back to your router's web page and set up wireless security (don't use WEP - that is not secure enough)
4. You will have to setup QoS (Quality of Service), in order to prioritize your VOIP traffic, so calls go through clear even when you are surfing/downloading.
5. You can setup QoS via IP or MAC address. Use your vonage router's MAC address (you'll find that on the bottom sticker), because it creates less overhead.
6. If you plug in anything else into your vonage router, it might be on a different subnet and might not be able to communicate with your other computers (vonage router often use 192.168.15.x as their IP address)
7. Once you're up and running and feel familiar with the settings for your router, I would change to a different firmware, because QoS is a crucial point for VOIP and I never was really satisfied with the Linksys firmware. I use tomato, for the simple reason that I was afraid of other more complicated firmware and you can always go back to Linksys, of you don't like it.

So...my fingers are bleeding now, but I hope this helped you out.

Your connection should be from DSL modem > internet port of Linksys router > Vonage phone adapter to port 1 of the router.

I am going to attempt to give you a solution here. But you must understand a few things before I begin.

First, I would like to clarify that if you have Time Warner internet service, you are on Cable Internet. Not DSL. (This makes a world of difference when it comes to using a router.)

Secondly, you did not specify model numbers of your devices. Therefore I am assuming that you are using the following devices:

• Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router
• Linksys PAP2 Vonage VOIP Phone Adapter
• Standard cable modem made by either Toshiba or Motorola

If this is not the correct equipment, continue to follow the instructions but be dynamic and adapt my instructions to the equipment you have. It should be similar enough that you shouldn't have any problem easily doing this.

This instruction set is going to begin from a point that is assuming that we're installing all of this equipment from the standpoint of a completely new installation. From the ground up.

Let's begin.

UNPLUG AND POWER DOWN ALL OF YOUR EQUIPMENT INCLUDING THE CABLE MODEM, ROUTER, PC AND VONAGE BOX. Do not power on any of the devices until instructed to do so.

1.) Connect your cable modem to the cable from the wall.

2.) Find the ethernet port on your cable modem. Connect the blue ethernet (CAT5) cable to the ethernet port.

3.) Plug the other end of the blue ethernet cable into the "Internet" port of the router. (Older routers used to also call this a "WAN" port.) It is the only port that is seperated from the rest of them.

4.) Connect another ethernet cable to port 1 of the router.

5.) Connect the other end of the ethernet cable to the network port of your PC.

6.) Connect yet another ethernet cable to port 2 of the router.

7.) Connect the other end of this ethernet cable to the ethernet port of the Vonage box.

8.) Plug in the power adapter of the cable modem. Wait 1 minute for the cable modem to acquire it's signal and set up the connection to Time Warner.

9.) Plug in the power adapter of the Linksys router. It should only take 15-20 seconds to set itself up. (If you have made any configurations to the router prior to this, I recommend pressing and holding the RESET button for at least 10 seconds to give you a fresh configuration state to start with.)

10.) Plug in the power adapter to the Linksys PAP2 VOIP Phone Adapter.

11.) Power on your PC. You should have an internet connection with it.

You see... As I read the configuration you described, I don't think that you're using a PAP2 phone adapter. You said that you connected the "vonage device" to both your modem and your PC. This is not possible with the PAP2 adapter as it only has ONE ethernet port.

I am led to believe that you are actually using the Linksys WRTP54G which is essentially the same thing as the WRT54G, but with Vonage support built-in.

If that is the case, then you will not need to use the WRT54G router. Instead, follow the instructions that I gave you assuming that the router and the phone device are combined into one device. (The ports will still be labeled the same.)

Download the installation guide for the WRTP54G from the product page link I just gave you. You'll find the link to the User Guide on the right-side panel. This will make everything clearer for you if you do indeed have that router instead of the PAP2 phone adapter.
