If the Operating software in your computer is windows xp just connect the camera to your computer using the usb cord. It will automatically detect your camera in my computer. Double click the icon of your camera to open the files.

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

My daughter has a Canon FS20. The joystick that allows you to toggle thru the menu is not working. She has video stored on the built in memory. How can she externally manually retrieve those?

Unless you have a remote for the camera, the joystick control mechanism will need to be replaced. This can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.
