Not to over simplify your problem, but have you cleaned the optical eye of the drive lately? Sometimes we overlook the simple things.
The laser optical eye is located at the bottom of the drive. This equals a good(?) area for the eye to become covered with dust.
Some use a drive cleaner that resembles a CD disk with a brush on it, and a cleaning solution.
I use a can of compressed air for computers, and shoot air towards the bottom of the drive.
(Drive tray open, computer off, AND unplugged from power)
Installed and uninstalled it? Through Device Manager? This never works for me.
Neither does roll back the driver.
I use a different software method, and then a physical one if that does not work. Past this point the drive is unusable, and has seen the end of it's Life Cycle.
(Computer mechanical hardware components have a Life Cycle. So many hours of usage)
Software Method:
1) Start>Right-click on My Computer>Left-click on Properties>
Left-click on Hardware tab>Device Manager
2) Left-click on the + sign next to DVD/CD-ROM drives
3) Right-click on the drive name in question.
(Teac w58e)
4) Left-click on Properties in the drop down menu
5) Left-click on the Driver tab
6) Left-click on Uninstall
There will be a warning window.
'Warning you are about to uninstall this device...and so on'
Click on OK.
7) Close the Device Manager window. Close the System Properties window.
8) Shut the computer down normally. (Start>Turn Off Computer>Shut Down)
Wait 1 minute. Turn the computer back on. After Windows has fully loaded, you should see out of your task bar,
'Found New Hardware',
and perhaps, 'Found Teac w58e'
See if the optical drive works now.
No?
Shut the computer down normally. Unplug from power. Open the computer case.
TOUCH the metal frame of the computer case, to relieve your body of Static electricity.
Unplug the power cable, and the interface cable from the drive. (Data cable)
Press the Power On button in, and hold it in for a count of Five seconds. Let go of the button.
Do this procedure two more times.
Now plug the power cable, and the interface cable back into the Teac optical drive.
Close the computer case. Plug the computer back into power.
WAIT 1 minute.
Turn the computer on.
If this doesn't do it, I suggest the Teac optical drive is toast.
Testimonial: "My expert was very kind and detailed. I appreciate all the time it took for the directions given. Karen"
To reiterate:
1) Try cleaning the drive first
2) Try the software method
3) Try the hardware method
Wanted to add that for one of my own computers, about 3 years ago, I replaced a Samsung unit, and a Teac unit. (DVD drive, and DVD burner drive, respectively)
Replaced them with Lite On DVD burner unit's. (IDE just like yours)
Found them at a local large chain store. $45 each. Came with Nero 7 burner software.
They are dual layer, DVD combo drives, with Smart Technology, and LightScribe Technology.
You can use dual layer disks
It plays, and records CD's and DVD's
Smart Technology so that any format of CD/DVD disk is recognized. (CD-R-, CD-R+, CD-RW-, CD-RW+, DVD-R-, DVD-R+, and so on)
LightScribe Technology. Burn labels to apply to your disks, or burn directly to the center of the disk. (With HP LightScribe disks)

Not advertising for any manufacturer, nor store. It's just personal experience I thought I would share.
(Should have had patience, and bought them online. MUCH cheaper!)
{IDE is also referred to as PATA now.
Parallel ATA
SATA is Serial ATA.
The IDE name was changed to PATA to avoid confusion)
You are most kind Karen, (Blushing!)
I appreciate the rating, and the kind testimonial!

Have you attempted to try to use a different burning software? Some are more forgiving than others. Windows has an internal burner and there is also Roxio

Yes. I have tried several differnt burning programs. All state place disk in drive. I also read somewhere ccleaner could interfere so I unistalled that even though I had the program for a long time. I also downloaded and installed microsoft fix it and a driver but it still continues to ask me to put a disk in the drive. I have also discovered it will no longer read a DVD. Could this be a hardware issue? Karen
I did all of it. Thank you. I have decided the drive is toast. Karen
