Check for updated firmware on Dells support site. There's only one laser to read, write. If it's reading it should write unless the switching eprom is bad or outdated, udated firmware should solve the problem

My combo DVD drive will burn a CD, but when I put in a blank DVD it just opens the drawer and says to insert a disc. Windows XP.

If it is in fact a Teac CD-Rewritable W58E CD-RW Burner, this will only burn CDs and not DVDs. If you put in a blank DVD you will get this error. You will need a burner that has DVD burning support.

I am trying to upload video from my pvgs2 to a dvd on win xp using a wire fire usb converter cord.but neither xp or win 7 recognizes the hardware I dont have regular fire wire connections on either...

Hey! I think you need a DV to DVD burning tool to help you burn dvd from your pvgs2 DV. I recommend you use this DV to DVD Burning software which I had a good luck with.

You can have a try of it. Hope that helps.

Can't burn DVD but can burn cd

There is a possibility that the laser of the optical drive is not functioning anymore to write dvd. This is what you have to do.

Click on Start
Click Run
Type regedit and press OK
Registry Editor windows will come up
go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
CLass
{4d36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

on the right hand side, delete "Upper FIlters" and "Lower Filters" you may see on it. Everything that has something to say on upper and lower filters.

Close the Registry Editor and then Click on START, right click on My Computer and then select Properties.

Go to Hardware Tab and click on Device Manager
click on the (+) sign of the cd/dvd rom and right click on the item below and select Uninstall.

Close everything and restart your computer and try burning a dvd

***remember to use burning software since windows XP explorer could not simply burn data using the Explorer it self.

Windows XP not recognizing cds/dvds in my HP DVD640i

Most likely your CD-DVD burning software is corrupted. When that happens, the machine doesn't recognize the existence of the CD/DVD hardware. Clean up your machine, defrag, run a freeware registry cleaer-defragmenter (see C-net for a good one). Then Reinstall/upgrade your burning software (the Windows XP software is not sufficient) either from HP/Compaq, if it came with your machine, or the program website if you purchased it separately. You may find out which it is by using a marvelous freeware program called Belarc advisor.

Dell Dimension 5150 DVD Players Will not play

maybe the carbons of the DVD reader are getting too old and it doesn't rotate as fast as how it was burned so it cannot read the movies..
buying a new one will fix your problem..
the problems of nano technology is that things are too small to be fixed by humans...

maybe you could play those games because they were old, and since most of the stuff its installed in your computer it doesn't need much from the DVD unit..

Writer will read but not burn

Can you remove the burning software and try to burn by dragging files using the built in windows xp imapi? Check the event viewer for any system events around the time when you are having problems. Also try following these instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060 If you have another pc you can try the burner with, you would be able to rule out software issues.
