Hard Drive not accessible, now not recognised by computer

I have my 1TB Maxtor External Hard Drive (purchased last year) and it worked perfectly fine until yesterday morning.

I left it plugged into my Computer (still working) when my computer updated itself (Windows Vista Home Basic). When I returned, the screen was black and it said 'Recovering files ...' and those files were on my external Hard Drive. After it finished 'Recovering Files' and updated the Windows, my computer couldn't detect the hard drive. First I thought, maybe because the hard drive was hot or something, and I unplugged it. In the evening, I tried to plug in and everything went okay except I couldn't access the drive. I tried defrag, used TuneUp Disk Doctor and even uninstall the recent updates. Nothing work. Still not accessible. But when I checked the HD with Disk Doctor, it detected all files in the hard drive. So, it probably still working.

I posted the problem earlier this morning and got a solution. But right now, when I plugged the HD back to my computer, the computer couldn't recognize it. It kept saying USB malfuction. I tried using different ports and my other computer, but still getting the same 'USB Malfuction' sort of thing.

Can anyone help? There are valuable data inside my HD and I really need them back for my work. Please help!

Do you have another computer you can plug it into? The problem could be with your USB. If it is, see what updates you installed and then removed that may have affected that. You can also go to the manufacturers web site and download the original firmware or updated firmware files.

Hello, please try the following:
1. Try changing your drives usb cable 2. Run a disk check on your drive to fix any errors. If the problem remains then its a sure sign your drive is about to fail, backup or recover your data quickly using drive recovery software.

Computer will not recognise external hard drive

Here are a few things to try. If you have access to a secondary PC or laptop, try connecting your drive to it using a different USB cable. Also try unplugging your drive from the power outlet for a few seconds and then connecting it again. If it?s still not being recognized, Maxtor has a free utility called PowerMax (available at www.maxtor.com) that lets you run various tests on your drive till it identifies the problem.
Good luck!

External Hard Drive not Accessible after Windows Vista Update

Assuming that the external hdd is physically working fine, everything is pointing to a damaged boot sector.

You can get back most (if not all) your data stored in your external drive with the help of an application called: Pc Inspector File recovery.
Its a freeware.
Here is the link: http://pcinspector.de/Sites/file_recovery/download.htm?language=1#

Simply install it on your C:\ drive, and follow the prompts.
Please let us know the outcome.

option 01. try the unit on another windows pc. if its the same. i am afraid you might have an issue with the device.

option 2 . you could remover the **** from the enclosure & fix it directly to the pc so that you can retrive the data. however this will have an impact on your warranty

Can't detect an external Hard drive (Maxtor 1TB)

im going to assume your on XP for these instructions. other wise you still need to do the same thing.

right click the my computer desktop or the start menu. go down to properties. open the hardware tab. open the device manager. Scroll down to it, remove the driver, just delete the whole entry. unplug the hard drive, then plug it in again. See if that works.

hope this will fixya....
