Maxtor Basics 1Tb external hard drive not working

Hi,

I recently purchased a Maxtor Basics 1Tb external hard drive, and have transferred ALL MY FAMILY'S PHOTO'S to it. It was working fine for a few days but then one morning Windows didn't detect it, and the LED kept flashing green. I then tried accessing it from another computer running Ubuntu, which i had done before, but this didn't work either.

I am desperate please help!
my 1TB external hard drive flashes green and makes a beep every 3 seconds when I put my ear to it, I have ALL my important files on there, it worked a second ago too, if its broke Im screwed...I can't risk re-formating it, and even doing that is impossible as windows wont detect it now...

What kind of computer is it hooked to?

    How is hooked up, USB?

When you click start, then computer, does it show up at all as a lettered drive? If not now, did it when the computer recognized?

Option 01. try the unit on another windows pc. if its the same. i am afraid you might have an issue with the device.

option 2 . you could remover the **** from the enclosure & fix it directly to the pc so that you can retrive the data. however this will have an impact on your warranty

Very odd! What happens if you try and save a file? You say you have 'looked all over' but have you been to look in Device Manager?
Start>Control Panel>System>device manager>disk drives. If has a disk drive showing is there a Red cross or Yellow ! mark? If not right click on disk drives and look at properties.
Then come back and update us please.

Hi there we purchased a maxtor basics 500gb hard drive about 3 years ago. we have had children in that time and unfortunetly our two year old daughter dropped it. we have taken it to a service store but...

If it is the external hard drive enclosure that is broken then yes. But if it is the hard drive itself that is broken then no.
From what happened I'm thinking that it is the external hard drive enclosure that is broken. That being said, you can easily buy one without the hard drive online. When doing this be sure you know what kind of hard drive is in your Maxtor enclosure. This is important because you need to be sure that your hard drive and enclosure are compatible. Check to see if it uses SATA, ATA, or PATA connectors and then buy the corresponding external hard drive enclosure.
Once you have bought your new empty external hard drive enclosure, it is simply a matter of opening up your Maxtor enclosure and moving the hard drive inside to your newly purchased enclosure and connecting it to your computer.
To avoid problems like this in the future, look into "cloud based storage" to back up all of your data securely online.

Maxtor Basics external portable hard drive not getting detected

Right Click on My Computer, click on Manage, go to Disk Managment, if the drive is available you will see it there. Check to see if it has a drive letter assigned to it, if not right click on it and choose Change Drive letters. Make sure you are on the external drive though, you don't want to change your C drive accidentally. It should pop up in My Computer.

Maxtor Basics portable 320gb Mac to pc compatability problems

Hi Tys,

I had a similar issue with my Maxtor Basics portable 500GB drive. I hadn't formatted mine yet, but had heard there were issues, so decided to find out before I start. I even saw your post here looking for an answer. Finally, one of my friends told me the following solution, which worked fine for me:

Don't format the drive as any of the Mac OS Extended options, simply reformat it as MS-DOS (it should be one of the options in Disk Utilities when you choose Erase and go to the Volume Format dropdown list).

Your Mac should be able to recognise and use the drive in this format and it works for PCs. Transferring files between the two shouldn't be a problem.

A thing to note, though, is that these Maxtor drives apparently come ready-formatted as MS-DOS (mine did). But while my Mac recognised the drive, I couldn't copy files on to it. If this happens, erase this MS-DOS formatting with... MS-DOS. Don't ask me why this works, I'm not a Mac Genius, but now my Maxtor is trouble-free and can transfer files from PC to Mac and back again.

Hope this works out for ya!

K

I can't transfer anything and I get error 0x80070571

Get all your data off of the drive and then try to format it. If you still have errors, the drive is more than likely failing

Maxtor basics desktop storage 1000gb wont start up but has power

im sorry, but it sounds like a hardware problem. theirs not many options.
you may either void your warranty by opening it up and hoping you can use the hard drive in another case (hope its not the hard drive)
or you can return it under the warranty. That is a bummer.

The terrabyte hard drives havent been completley worked out yet. i have heard of a bunch of problems with them failing because of how they are made. The scary part is i dont think they fixed all the problems with the 1tb drives and now they are moving onto 2 tb's!?!?!?
