I have a Maxtor 200G external hard drive. It has worked perfectly for 3 years. Last night I defragged it and now it can not accessed. Can I et it back up and access my data? If so, How? Any help would be appreciated/ Thanks.

Try to get your hands on some data recovery software like Easy Recovery Pro.
Initially you can try using SEATOOLS to see if that can help.

Several things could be happening.
1. the hard drive direct drive motor is giving out.
2. the hard drive is full.
3. the hard drive needs to be optimized ( that is defragmented) using the Windows defragment utility. If the drive is large it will take some time to complete.

Hard Drive not accessible, now not recognised by computer

Do you have another computer you can plug it into? The problem could be with your USB. If it is, see what updates you installed and then removed that may have affected that. You can also go to the manufacturers web site and download the original firmware or updated firmware files.

Sorry, Maxtor prog on poota is currupted. Have you recently downloaded programmes? When updating, some progs have a nasty side-effct of hitting some other programmes, not all the time, just your important ones?

You will have to uninstall and reinstall Maxtor prog, Not sure there might be a repair facility, not sure but it worth a try before uninstalling all.

You did well to have it work so long!
It is out of warranty - open it up, remove the drive from the case. It may be a SATA drive, but probably an IDE from 4 years ago...

Just place it in your computer and it should work fine. The most common problem is the controller card for the external connection has failed. so putting it in your computer as a normal drive will either fix it - or tell you that the drive has died.

Very Simple. Just connect the Maxtor External Hard drive to your new laptop. Open Windows Explorer and you will see the Maxtor appearing as a Drive. Access the files from the explorer.
My advice is that create a new folder on the maxtor and then do a backup of your new laptop on to this new folder.
DO the same for your office PC.

External hard drive -help please?

Hi

Have you checked it on other pc ? If yes then your hard disk is corrupted you lost partition information but dont worry u can retrieve your data by getbackdata for NTSF. Its able to retrieve about 98% of data or other is Acronis Disc Direct Suite, the same reliable and really working tool to restore information. It really restored ALL files in lost partition
After using these tools just format your hardisk and it will work dont worry
