I take it that you are using USB 2.0, if so try another port preferably one at the back of the computer. Also check if the drive is present in MyComputer - Properties - Manage - Disk Management. If it, is make sure that it has a drive letter assigned to it.

My 'Elements' WD 500G external hard drive is no longer powering up - it has an external separate power supply (it isn't one that powers via USB only). The power supply 'box' is flashing a green light. Do I...

If it is a matter of just the power supply failing, you can get a replacement. It is possible to remove the HD and place it in a new case with a new power supply, as well. However, if you suddenly smell something burning after that, you are on the trail to adventure. That might be a burnt out diode, easy enough for a PC repair shop to replace. Or, it might be something more serious and you would need an expensive data recover shop to get back your loss. You could call Western Digital customer service and see what they have to offer in terms of a power supply or make use of the following link:

WD External hard disk fails !!!!?

Most of the front side USB extensions will experience power surges if it was incorrectly connected within the cabinet. So try connecting it to backside of your cabinet directly to your motherboard. If still the problem exists, check for proper ground connection to your electrical outlet.

Problem turning on hd

WD = Western Digital , 250Gigabyte external USB drive.

This is where you may need to perform all the USB checks and trouble shooting in the book + load any driver software that came with the drive.

also I would need to know what motherboard and what operating system you are using before I can help farther.

normaly windows 98 and 98 se did was just not able to make proper use of the USB ports , also on nforce2 motherboards service pack2 was required to enable the USB 2.0 feature
we are constantly lied to by the computer industry so get used to it untill the feds crack their skulls.

and remember if it's not hebrew , it's a lie :-> lhime shalom.

Western Digital 120 GB Hard Drive

Well usually external hard drives are just a regular hard drive in an encolsure! You can try to mount the hard drive to a regular pc using the ide/sata connector(Im not real sure which interface your drive will use). From there you can tell wether its the actual drive that is giving trouble or just the USB enclosure! Most of the times with those name brand external drives its a lil complicated to figure out how to take it apart to take out the hard drive. What you can also do is try(if you get it open) to see if you can unplug the hard drive from the enclosure then power on the enclosure and see if the lights come up green(or whatever color it uses to indicate ready)! if it does then power off the enclosure then re-connect the drive to the enclosure and power on again! Maybe that works! Removing the drive might void your warranty, proceed at your own risk! Good Luck regards, babb
