This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.
First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action
Enter your model number(110.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.
It sounds as if your Lid Switch is broken.
Following is a Whirlpool PDF of the operation and maintenance of top load, direct drive washers with a section on how to by-pass the switch.

Follow the first couple of sections of the following
ILLUSTRATED DESCRIPTION OF REMOVING CABINET THRU TRANSMISSION.

for how to tilt the console back, use a short insulated piece of wire between the two outermost pins on the lid switch and try the spin cycle.
If the washer works, follow the instructions on removing the cabinet to get at the switch and the Sears site to see exactly where the switch is to replace it.
