Power supply on monitor is being pulled down. Probably a bad inverter board. Confirm this by disconnecting the power cable to the board and apply power to the monitor. The flashing amber light will now cycle.

  • Anonymous Jul 16, 2008

I mentioned before that a flashing power on button meant that the power supply was being pulled down. Most probably the inverter board is bad. Check the (4) transistors that supply the high voltage transformers at least 1 will be defective. Replace them in pairs. They can be replaced with # 2SC5707. You can get them from suburban-elect.com. The real cause for them blowing is the .33uf @250 volt cap. located between the transistors. You can get a replacement from digi-key (part no. 495-1297-ND) You will have to get a little creative when you solder it in; the replacement cap is physically larger than the original. I soldered one transistor on the back of the board.

When this occurs an inverter, backlight, vga connectiosn, etc could be the cause, my suggestion is connect it to some other device, if you get the same result then your monitor is bad!

Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, blown fuses, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed LG monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

My monitor went black, and the power switch just flashes.

is your CPU working properly? if that the case, your monitor is in need of a service.
reasons for why a monitor goes blank?
Reason 1: Wetness
The number one reason why computer monitors go blank is - wetness. Believe it or not, when your computer monitor is exposed to humid air, sometimes water can condense and accumulate in the monitor. This causes the monitor to malfunction and go blank. I've had this happen to my desktop PC at least three times before. What you need to do is to leave the monitor alone for some time and allow the water to evaporate. That usually solves the problem.

Reason 2: Faulty Graphics Card
The next reason why your computer monitor goes black is due to a faulty graphics card. The best way to detect this kind of problem is to connect up a new monitor to your PC, then check if you have a blank screen. If you continue to have a blank screen, then it's likely your video card is faulty.

Reason 3: Faulty RAM
This one is less obvious and less common, but it can happen. You might sometimes get bad RAM modules which prevent your PC from booting up even to the basic BIOS startup screen. To detect this kind of problem is more troublesome, you might need to remove those RAM modules and insert them into another computer.

Reason 4: Loose Connections
Another reason why your monitor goes blank is due to loose connections. The connection from the monitor to the mains is usually a culprit, as is the connection between the monitor and the video card. Check those connections before you declare your computer monitor as faulty.

Reason 5: A Short Circuit In The Motherboard
And the final reason why your computer monitor goes blank? It's possibly because of a short circuit in the motherboard. This is the most undesirable outcome of course, as you might have to replace your entire motherboard. However, it's possible that this can happen - so keep your fingers crossed and hope it doesn't happen to you.
try this.

Blue power button flashing with blank screen

This is most likely the power inverter board in the monitor - this is common in many monitors. If it started taking longer and longer to display an image, and the power light is blinking on-and-off, that's the problem. You can confirm that it's the monitor and not your computer or the cable by plugging in another monitor if you have one to try.

If it's under warranty, send it back, if not, there are inverter boards for many common models of LCD monitors that are replaceable. The board can run anywhere from $50 on up. Depending on how old it is, you may find it better to just replace it with a gently used one from ebay.

Blank Screen, Flashing orange power light...

1st Idea - Let's take a look under the cover. I'm not sure how tech savvy you are, but I'm sure you're pretty good if you have a soldering iron. Once inside locate the power supply section. See if you see any blown capacitors on it or any other boards. One obvious way is to see if they are bad is if they have bulging up tops. There could be some weak or bad ones that aren't popped up, but let's start from there. If there are any bad caps, they are dirt cheap price wise at an electronics shop. Keep me posted and let em know what you find. - Scotty

Green light blinking screen blank

Hi Suzee,

Is the green flashing on the tower or the monitor?

If it is flashing on the monitor, then it might be tht the monitor is not gettign signal from the tower.
To check, disconnect the monitor from the tower and check the monitor. If you get a msg on the screen like no input signal or check video cable, then 99% monitor is fine.

Check for the power supply light at the back of the tower.

Disconnect everything from the computer and then press and hold the power button on the comp for about 30 seconds.

Then connect the cables and check if it is working.
