You attach the card reader to your computer via the USB port, then place the media card in the appropriate slot.

How can i transfer pictures from acer iconia to memory card

This Tablet Personal Computer [PC] takes Micro Secure Digital [SD] Cards. To transfer pictures from a Digital Camera to this PC, if the Camera also takes Micro SD cards, is simply a matter of removing the Micro SD card from the Camera and installing it in the PC's Micro SD Card Slot and then waiting for the PC's AutoPlay function to serve up the photo files stored on the card, which can then be Dragged and Dropped into a photo folder on the PC.

If the Camera takes SD Cards, then a Micro SD to SD Card Adapter is required so that the PC's Micro SD Card can fit in the camera before pictures are taken and then disconnected from the adapter afterwards, for re-insertion in the PC.

If the Camera takes a different type of Memory Card, then a Multi Card Reader might be required, which would be connected to the computer's USB Port and the Memory Card slotted into its matching slot in the Card Reader.

I've lost all my photo's by pressing the 'transfer mode' button. I've run it through some file recovery software which says thay are within the camera but not on the sd card. The pictures are visible with...

Try this...Download the photo recovery program http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-Up-and-Recovery/Asoftech-Photo-Recovery.shtml

You must not take anymore pictures on your card. You have to use a card reader either on your computer or an external USB card reader.Put the card in the card reader, open the the program, select the drive where you recover pictures from, then click on start. Wait, for it to do it's magic.

You need to use a card reader either one already in your computer (some have one, some don't). Or buy an external USB card reader. They are around 10.00 and can be found at walmart, bestbuy, frys, probably target.
The problem with built in card readers is that they will usually only read up to a 2G card.

I was not able to recover photos by hooking the camera up to the pc with the usb cord, it just won't work.

This is the important part. Choose the pics you want to recover, then choose recover, a box comes up asking where you want to save to. Choose documents/my pictures or wherever you want to save your pictures too. The pictures ONLY save to your pc and not the card.

Format your card in the camera after you have retrieved your photos and backed them up to an external source.

How to transfer pictures, computer to ultra card reader/writer

Open up Windows Explorer. Not Internet Explorer. So you can see all your drives and subdrives.

Find your pictures. Let's say you had them on C:\My Pictures. Go there and copy them all. Then find out which drive your card reader/Writer is showing up as. Usually like G.

Once you've copied the pictures, switch to that drive and paste them. Remove the card reader and they should be on there.

Unable to take pictures from card /writer to computer

Once you have inserted your memory card in the reader, usually after a few seconds a dialog box will ask you if you want to open the pictures, copy them, etc. If not, you might have to manually check the drive letter assigned to the card by examining the drives under windows explorer. Once you have figured this out, you can copy the files from the card to your PC

Image upload

??? These cameras take standard CF cards (and store images in standard JGP format) that can be 'read' directly by PC's with a multi-media card slot.

If your PC does not have a card slot, you can buy a USB CF Card Reader/Writer for a few dollars ..

PS always reformat the CF cards in the Camera not the PC ..
