check for corrosion on your battery's contacts. If that's OK try operating your camera with the lense off.
If succeeded, you should try and fix your lense (do check if your camera wasn't damaged by it too).

Having same issue as above - I thought it was my cable so I ordered a new one. The camera attempts to 'speak' to the pc - and then the Windows box pops up not recognising the USB installed device....I also uninstalled and reloaded the Canon software (had camera for 18 months and only started this rubbish a month back) - was about to re-laod my entire PC - thankfully I saw it was not only me.

Will send mine in for a Firmware update / service.

I had this problem and thank you to the gent that suggested there was a battery compartment closing detection mechanism. I have a battery grip and had removed that to register my t2i (needed the serial number on the bottom) and never checked operation after replacing. I toyed with the lever using a pen and noticed the red light flicker. I replaced the battery grip with batteries and all is well.
Sometimes we need a nudge to dig deeper... I had looked at the possibility of a door closed switch much the same as the the switch on the sd card door. I took a second look and found it. Thanks a million for jogging my analytical brain!

Use a card writer and copy your pictures to the CF card on the computer.

Not really a solution, and about 3 years late :) my EOS400D also developed the same problem (however it was also coincidence that I had just updated to Firmware 1.1.1 (from 1.0.4), but basically the flash would pop up, but wouldn't fire (so not the standard problem with the microswitches), I found with a bit of forum searching that if you hold the flash down to almost clicking it in and then shoot it does actually fire. I am going to see how much it costs to get this fixed and will post what the actual fault is if I can understand the repairman.

Such symptom indicate a malfunction on the DC/DC voltage converter circuitry, and the camera has two of them located in different boards.

In order to perform a correct diagnostics and repair of it, it is necessary to open such camera and perform it by a qualified camera repair technician.

If it's under warranty, I do recommend you to send it back to make valid the warranty.

If not, then you hav the options of pay for its repair, or do it yourself if you are willing tgo open it and perform some basic diagnostics of the failure. You will needtools to do it, which includes the usage of a soldering iron.

Best regards,

This is usually caused by impact or sticky liquid spillage on the flash causing it to stick down. Lift up on the flash head when it clicks to free it and then used a Qtip soaked in water or Windex to clean around the flash. You may have to disassemble the flash and clean the pivots -especially the pivot screw if rusted (scape off the rust with a Xacto blade and then lightly coat with grease)

usually this is caused by putting the card in sideways. you can usually see if pins are bent or pushed through (loose floating around inside) and you see an empty black rectangle where the pin should be.

pins are soldered to main circuit, and the XTi uses lead free solder which requires skill to repair. this is repairable but would run you somewhere in the $150-190 range

Yes, it could be an issue with the camera or the battery. The easiest way to find out is to try a different battery in the camera. If this works then the most likely culprit is your battery. If this doesn't work then your camera requires service.A good camera store should let you try one of their batteries in your camera.

You don't need any special software to use your camera.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what I said first, you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Picsaa.

SD cards come in different levels. If you look at your card there should be a number on the front of the card. the higher the number means the faster the card. If you have a level 6 card then you shouldn't have the problem of getting a busy signal. your photos are large files and if your card is slow ie a level 3 then it takes time for the data to copy to it. So find yourself a level 5 or 6 card and you shouldn't have this problem.

Sorry to hear about this. I have a similar camera and have been racking my brain about this...

My only thought...are you using the same battery charger? Perhaps the battery charger is to blame. You may be out of battery on both batteries. When you install the battery, does ANYTHING happen? Does it say, LOW Battery or CHANGE the battery? Or is it totally black? If nothing happens at all, you should probably contact Canon directly. Or purchase a new charger and see if that fixes the problem.

Welcome to Fixya
Err 99 could means several different things, such as... Memory Card, Lens or Lens contacts....

Here's what you can try:

Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card is bad. Try another lens if you can. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens). Worst case scenario is, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon.

Have a good one!
