The basic rule of charging is "charge for 3 hours for every hour of use".

You won't hurt anything if you charge it overnight, but don't leave it charging for more then 24 hours.

If you wear the battery out eventually, Batteries Plus can re-pack the battery.

My cordless vac will not charge properly. It starts and stops a few times before it quits all together.. Any ideas on how to remedy this problem?

How old is this vac? I ask because newer cordless systems use better battery technology with memory on charging. If it is fairly new then it could be a loose charging port. If it is more than 3 years old you may need to think about a new vac unless you can physically change the battery. (Li-Ion/newest and has 'memory', NiMH, NiCd are older).

Like all batteries after a while they go bad/will not hold a charge. especially the kind that is always plugged in/always charging, like electric shavers, cordless vac and so on.
