Upper Thread Tension knob on machine is too tight.or needs cleaning to remove lint. Once the needle has been threaded, you should be able to pull thread through the needle with only a modest effort and no breaking.
There is also an adjustment for the lower bobbin (spool) on the spool carrier. for most machines.
The thread coming out from the spool passes under a flat spring to give it tension for an even stitch- to tight it breaks the thread, too loose it leaves you with excess thread per stitch.
If you can remove carrier with bobin, let out about 1 or 2 handspans of thread, and hold the carrier up by the thread. If it falls, it is too loose. If it does not move, not even with a gentle shake- it is too tight. Correct tension will hold the carrier and spool by their weight, and a light shake will have the assembly slow fall as it unstrings the bobbin. The flat spring is held in place by a small screw, just loosen the screw slighlty to allow you to slide the spring one way or the other and retitghten.
