Camera Wont turn On: Is it stuck in USB mode? How do i fix it?

I was transfering pictures with my camera usb-cord/cradle; then it said "not responding" so i took the camera off the usb cradle. Then the problem started!
The camera
1. wont turn on no matter how many times i push "on/off" button
2. i put it on the cradle and the usb green-light turns off, i try to turn usb off ,but it stays on
3. i put camera on usb cradle and hook it up to my computer. a "malfunctioned usb" error comes up

My camera wont do ANYTHING. Its just off. stuck in USB mode. It wont even charge!
How do i fix this problem!?
Thanks in advanced!

Re: Camera Wont turn On: Is it stuck in USB mode? How do...

I was able to get past this problem by removing and reinserting the battery. This caused, in effect, a hard reset of the camera, which let me power it up fresh and take pictures again. Of course, it's not exactly reassuring that the problem arose in the first place,

I couldnt able to copy from my sony camera to my pc

RE not being able to USB function on Sony Cyber Shot camera connecting it to TV....solution was to change USB Mode on camera from PTP to AUTO.
Turn on camera, press home button. Click to Main Settings 1 and then use down arrows to go to Main Settings 2. Highlight USB MODE PTP, and use right arrow to change setting to AUTO, and press Home button to exit.

My camera takes pictures great and charges but will not be recognized by my computer. yet all my other cameras have. even the previous one just before this. i'm very frustrated at this point!

Your camera has two USB modes, "Picture Transfer Protocol" and "Mass Storage". These days, Mass Storage is more common, and the problem could easily be that your camera is stuck in PTP mode. Can you go to Setup - Interface - USB mode and change it from PTP to Mass Storage and see if that helps?

My screen is blank (white) and has USB on the upper left corner... i lost my usb cord and it wont let me take pic's or use any of my buttons. What should I do?

Try taking the batteries out for about an hour, put them back in and try it. It seems to be stuck in USB mode which can only happen with a supply voltage of 5 volts coming IN the USB socket. Hopefully that will allow it to turn on in camera mode again.

DSC-S730 copy my picture to my computer?

The procedure to transfer pictures to a Computer depends on whether or not the Camera has the capability of using Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP). If the Camera is capable of PTP (in this case; DSC-S730 - YES), set the USB mode in the Camera menu to PTP and then use the PTP procedure to copy the pictures to the computer. Otherwise, use one of the standard USB transfer procedures.

This procedure must be performed while logged in as Administrator or to an account with Administrator rights:

  1. Turn on the Computer.
  2. Turn on the Camera.
  3. Insert the recording media containing the pictures into the Camera.
  4. Set the USB connection or Transfer mode setting in the Camera menu to PTP .
  5. Use the USB cable supplied with the Camera to connect the Camera to the Computer. NOTE: Connection through a USB hub or other USB device --such as a printer or keyboard-- is not supported and cannot be guaranteed. The Camera should be connected directly to a USB port on the Computer.
NOTE: The Scanner and Camera Wizard should automatically start.
  6. In the Scanner and Camera Wizard window, click the Next button.
  7. Under Choose Pictures to Copy , do one of the following:
    • Click to select each picture you want to copy.
    • Click Select All to select all the pictures for copying.
NOTE: Selected images will be marked with a green check mark.
  8. Click the Next button.
  9. Under Picture Name and Destination , in the Type a name for this group of pictures field, enter a name for the folder where the pictures will be saved.
  10. Next to the Choose a place to save this group of pictures field, click the Browse button.
  11. In the Browse for Folder window, click to select the location on the computer where you want to save the pictures.
  12. Click the OK button.
  13. In the Scanner and Camera Wizard window, click the Next button. NOTE: The pictures are copied to the Computer.
  14. After the transfer process it finished, under Other Options , click to select Nothing, I'm finished working with these pictures .
  15. Click the Next button.
  16. Click the Finish button.
If you are still unable to transfer pictures, please switch the USB mode of the Camera to Normal or Mass Storage and try again.
After following the steps above, the pictures from the camera should successfully be copied to the computer. If for some reason the pictures did not copy, try using the method for standard USB picture transfer.

I'm assuming you are using the Windows XP Operating System in the Computer. If not then follow this link:

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Turn on the camera.
  2. Insert the recording media containing the pictures into the camera.
  3. Depending on your camera, set the USB Connection or Transfer mode setting in the menu to the Mass Storage , Normal , or PTP .
  4. Use the USB cable supplied with the camera to connect the camera to the computer. IMPORTANT:
    • Connection through a USB hub or other USB device -- such as a printer or keyboard -- is not supported and cannot be guaranteed. Connect the camera directly to a USB port on the computer.
    • If the USB connection from the camera is not recognized by the computer, disconnect the USB cable and repeat steps 4 and 5 using a different USB Connection or Transfer mode setting. If the connection is still not recognized, further troubleshooting is available.

    • The computer will automatically install the USB driver for the camera.
    • When the camera connection is established, an AutoPlay window will appear.

  5. In the AutoPlay window, click Import pictures .
  6. In the Importing Pictures and Videos window, click the Import button. NOTE: After the pictures have been imported, the Windows Photo Gallery window will appear and display thumbnails of the imported images.
If this doesn't work there is an updated driver available

Get a usb memory card reader. I have never ever used the cord from camera to pc. It's so much easier to just take out the card.

My USB cord quit working

If the pictures are stuck in your internal camera memory, you will need a cord to get them off unelss you can transfer them to your memory card first. You should be able to copy the pics there.
