I have a brand new HP and the keyboard and mouse provided with the unit do not work; however my old wireless mouse and keyboard seem to work fine. Any ideas as to what is going on?

if your mouse is working. it would be the keyboard it self.. cause dell has bout wireless mouse and keyboard.. do you have warrenty on your system.. dell can replace the keyboard for free..
I suppose there is a reset button on the keyboard or the software provided so I suppose it could be possible, I don't know. I use a Microsoft Wired Keyboard... But Best of luck.
If you have both sets of keyboard and mouse plugged in, turn off the computer and remove the old mouse and plug in the new mouse. Reboot and if necessary use the keyboard to login. Once windows is loaded let it detect the new mouse and then shut down again. Take out the old keyboard and reboot. You should now be able to use both new pieces without problems.

if you have a disc for the new items ,install first, shut down pc, then take the old mouse & keyboard off connect the new wireless ones before rebooting
you may need to sync the mouse & keyboard by holding in the small little button on each item and the reciever unit untill the lights come on indicating it is recieving the signals from both mouse & keyboard.if this does not work put the old mouse back in reboot then go into control panel / mouse, and sellect wireless mouse ,turn off the pc plug the new mouse back in then boot up
Have you tried re-setting the frequency for one of the devices? simply click the button on the infra-red unit then click the button on the back of keyboard and notice the infra-red unit stopped scanning.

Turn the mouse over and find the small
rest/connect button on the bottom of the mouse and press it.
This should connect the mouse to the receiver and work properly.
If not, try pressing the receiver button and then press the button on
the mouse. This should be done whenever you change batteries or
glitch.
Hope this helps you. Bud
