It sounds like you need to update your USB or FIREWIRE motherboard drivers. I would lookup your motherboard model # and make...than download the most recent drivers from the manufacturer and try again.

The connectors are usually just soldered to the PCB inside. If you know how to solder then take it to bits and re solder it. Or take it to a computer repair shop and they should be able to do it for you.
I have seen hard drives where people had screwed around the partitions so bad that their computer would recognize it. I would recommend since Ubuntu can see it. Boot into a Ubuntu Live CD and delete any partition info so that it's a completely empty disc. Then try to use the Windows 7 DVD to install Windows. Comment back with your results.
The for ever to load can be solved by reading the blog below.
Wireless can have many problems, but i would recommend changing the channel on the wireless router. It could be that a neighbourgh is using the same wireless channel
try taking it apart making sure that the connections are plugged in good and tight , also reboot the computer while its plugged in , if still nothing listen for a spin up and spin down sound or a clicking sound , the spinning up and down sound means the motor is malfunctioning , a clicking sound means the units heads are malfunctioning , if any of these problems exist let me know my name is David or user name terminalcon just add attention to; and I will help you further .
That My Book thing is a pain in the rear. You need to check that your computer has USB2.0 and not 1. if it is 1.0, you'll take forever to do anything on the drive.
Confirm that you have USB2.0 rather than 1.0 before we could move on.
Sounds like you have a faulty hard drive. Can you see or detect the hard drive in the BIOS?
To test the hard drive, remove it from the laptop and connect it to a USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port. If this computer sees it as an external hard drive and you can open the various folders and files, then it os OK and the fault is in the laptop.
If the hard drive is faulty, then you need to replace the hard drive in the laptop and install Windows to get the laptop working again.
go into your command prompt...
click on start
click on run
type cmd
press enter
in the command window type
chkdsk d: (or whatever the drive letter is) /x /r
This will take a while to process especially for 500 GB so be patient.
There are multiple reasons why this could be happening. The most odvious would be the disk but you say that it looks fine. Next i would try to reset the xbox hard drive cache which involves a couple steps. "To perform the function, access 'memory' in the system blade, and then highlight the hard drive. Now press: Y, X, X, LB, RB, X, X. The following message should appear: "Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?"" After doing that does it improve the load times in the game? If that doesn't help it is most likely either the drive or the saved game. To test the drive try playing another game. If that works fine and loads at the normal pace then it is your saved game might need to be deleted. (If you have or can get ahold of a memory unit move the saved game to that and then delete it from the hard drive and test it. Afterwards you can then move it back over.) How that helps.
well you could buy a hard drive enclsure (usb) then open up the seagate and take out the hd (unplug it form the ribbon cables) then plug it into the enclosuer and try plugging that in. may or maynot work becouse the hd itself may be "fried"
