Take the screws out of the panel labeled 3. You'll find the hard drive in there. Usually, the drive will be secured with 2 or 3 screws - undo those and slide it out to remove/replace. I tried to look for a service manual but no dice. Best of luck!

Ibm thinkpad r52 no hard drive detected

The hard drive may have dislodged from the HD terminal. Some early laptops didn't reinforce the connection here. There is a bay under the laptop with a HDD or O)) symbol that opens with a small Phillips screwdriver. There should only be 2-4 screws on the bay panel. Open the bay. The hard drive should be firmly connected to the computer. Make sure the connection is good, then replace the bay cover and screws.

Start up the computer...Update the post on your outcome.

My expansion bay will not open.

Try to open the lid above the button with your nail, you'll see a metal plating covering the inside of it.The expansion bay is to add another drive, like a Cd/Dvd drive. Just don't worry about it too much, when you ad the new drive, you can take the plating off.Whoever adds the drive will open it up,too

It looks like there's an empty drive bay in my Gateway GM5446E Core-2 Duo desktop computer. I happen to have a spare Western Digital 500 GB Caviar drive. Can I use 2 hard drives in this machine?

You should be able to - but just as important as an open bay, is a connection to the motherboard and power is necessary. It would also matter which type of drive you have, IDE or SATA. If Sata, and the computer has Sata power, it should be a simple matter to add a Sata cable to an open connector on the motherboard. If IDE, you'd either need to have an open IDE port on the motherboard, or an open connection on an IDE cable. If there is no open port, but an open connection, you'd just have to set the drive to be the Slave, and it should otherwise work fine.

Realize you will probably need to partition and format the hard drive for the system to be able to utilize it.
