New computer and need to find out how to use printer

What kind of printer is it? How did it hook up to the old one physically? Was it a usb cable or an ethernet cable like the computer?

You don't need the disk. You can download the installation software from HP.com. I've included the link below.

You need to install the softeware first with the printer unplugged from the computer!

Insert your softeware disk and restart your computer, if computer doesn't detect new software when it is rebooting....than go into your control panel...click on install new software.

Once that is installed, you'll need to restart again with the printer hooked up this time.

Again, if computer doesn't detect new hardware, go into control panel, click on install new printer, you will have to select the make and model, or if you have the disk, select have disk, then next...you computer should install the hardware for you printer.

After installed, restart again...to see if if new software and hardware is detected and is being installed.

Go to your printers, from your control panel, and see if your printer is there, if not select, add new printer, it will take you through the process from there. Make sure you select this to be your default printer!

insert to your cd to the driver and look if there is any manual or readme file, if no just start with setup program - before you have to connect your new printer via usb to computer .

You have an HP printer and you purchased a new PC, correct?

We need to know what is the operating system for the new PC.

Next you need to check the HP website to see if HP has released a printer driver for this operating system.

For example, I have WINXP. If I upgrade to WIN7, I need to go to Lexmark's web site and see if the printer has a driver for WIN7.

If there is not a new driver, then I need to use the ADD Printer Wizard and use a generic printer driver.

You didn't mention operating systems, and that could make a big difference. If your new computer is running Windows 7 and the old one has an older system (Vista, XP, etc.) you could need a new driver for the printer. You'll need to check on the Lexmark web site to see if they have an updated driver. If they don't, your old printer and new computer may not be compatible.

You just need to select your operating system: XP or Vista and you can download the driver for your printer. Since you're not online yet with the new pc you can save the download to a USB flash drive and transfer it to the new computer.

Yes you need to run the setup CD for the printer on that computer so you can use the printer on that new computer, just run the setup CD of the printer and follow it unitl its done installing..

Two problem that occur. You plugged in the new printer before installing the software. If you have XP it will go and install it with it's drivers. Your printer wants it's own drivers. A second problem I've seen is having too many devices plugged into USB ports. If the software was installed properly, remove non-needed USB devices and re-boot the computer. If the printer works, look into purchasing a "POWERED" USB hub. They cost between $5-$25
