Cannot reset toner counter for Brother MFC-9140CDN printer

I have two Brother MFC-9140CDN printers, one at work and the other one at home. The printer at work ran out of black toner and as I was in a hurry I took the black cartridge from my printer at home and put it on the printer at work. To my surprise, it did not work despite it is at 80% toner level. New toner cartridge is ordered but will take several days to arrive and I can not afford to stop working for so long. Do you know how I can reset the toner counter so the printer can recognize the new toner cartridge?

You can reset the toner cartridges via the printer's menu.

  • if an error message appears on the LCD display, press the Cancel (X) button to show the main menu.
  • Press the Fax button to make the numeric keypad visible. Then, locate and only locate the Asterisk (Star) button on the numeric keypad. It is important to remember its location as it will not be lit up later when needed.
  • Press the Home button to return to the main menu.
  • Open the front cover of the printer (to access cartridges).
  • With the front cover open, press and hold the unlit Asterisk (Star) button for 5 seconds.
  • The reset menu will now appear on the LCD display.
  • Scroll through the menu to select a color and yield to reset.
  • The LCD will read "Accepted" once the reset is complete.

Drum Life Ends soon - Brother

The problem with this is the design. Each toner cartridge has a microchip on it, that counts the pages you print. The company has determined that you get x amounts of prints. Then you have to replace it, empty or not. This printers do not work the same way as an expensive professional business copier. In an pro style there is a spent toner cartridge that collects all of the wasted toner that is on the drum. On a small business/home style this spent toner goes back into the cartridge. There is no level indicator, even on the inkjet printer. They too, have a chip that says you have x amount of prints/cleaning cycles they can go through. Look up inkjet refill kits or inkjet cartridge programmer.

Reset 7470d cartridges

Not sure about your model, but it is nearly always in the menu accessed through a button on the machine. The MFC 7420 does it this way:
Switch printer on
Open front cover
press "Options"
Then enter "*00"
Should then see message saying toner counter reset

Brother 9970cdw toner

The Brother printers have a counter which will shut the printer down when the preset number of copies has been reached. You can reset the counter and it should print again. I did this 4 months ago. It bought me a little time, but my printer has begun to print a solid line down the left side of each page. I have cleaned everything that I can access to rule out smudged glass, etc. Perhaps it is just best to replace the drum or buy a new printer(much to Brother's delight and design).

Here's what you do if the drum counter was not reset when you replaced the drum. To reset the drum counter, follow the instructions listed below.

  1. Open the front cover.
  2. Press the Options key on the control panel.
The display will show "REPLACE DRUM - 1.YES 2.NO".
  3. Press 1 to reset the drum count.
  4. Close the front cover.
