SOURCE: smearing wont go away

Yes most likely it is a fixing unit issue where the toner is not being melted to the paper properly. Usually there is pressure tabs on each side of the unit that can be released to remove jams, if one is up or broken it can be the cause esp if the smudges are only on one side. If not the fixing then could be drum blade bad as well. All in all you will probably need a tech.

When was the last time the developer was replaced in the developer unit? If has been replaced, then you might have a bad ATDC (Automatic Toner Density Control) sensor Located right below the developer unit. If the developer was replaced when it was done was a vacuum cleaner used? IF so the static electricity from the vacuum clear destroyed the sensor, NEVER USE a VACUUM cleaner to remove the developer. Also when the developer was replaced, was counter cleared to tell the copier developer was replaced, the copier uses the counters to determine certain voltages for certain assemblies, if not image problems and codes can appear. Finally, was the F8 run after the developer was installed before ant prints or copies made? If not buy new developer and start over, counter is to be cleared first, then developer replaced, then F8 run.

Code cof32 appears

cof32 is telling us that ATDC sensor is reading toner supply incorrectly, now this Toner Density Control sensor sits inside the developer unit of this machine, and toner is feed into it, where the atdc sensor reads the amount of toner that it has mixed with the developer and adjust it occording to level initally set when developer was first installed.

Developer can become old and not attract the toner any more

Toner can clog up and not be able to get to it

Developer can be spilt so it is no longer at right level.

Maybe it wont stir cause of something mechanical

Sensor rarely fails

or maybe the ATDC sensor needs to reset it's level (service f8)

not sure but ...Service mode stop 00 stop 01 then select F and 8

Paper jams and c f 3 flashes

CF3 - ATDC sensor malfuntion. This sensor measures the density between toner and developer. You might have a problem with too short developer. Add some more and do F8.
The manual says basically that you either have a problem with de sensor (under a bottom plastic plate of the image unit) or the main board (PWB-A).

Have you replaced the opc drum lately?? The toner density is looked at on the drum with the ATDC sensor. It seems like your tring to adjust the toner density. That is just a band-aid. try to replace the developer and if needed the opc and clean the drum unit and the ATDC sensor. You shouldn't have to readjust in the service mode.
