Please follow the steps below on how to replace ink cartridge on the Lexmark X5495 printer:

1. Make sure the printer is on.
2. Lift the scanner unit. The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position, unless the printer is busy.
3. Press down on the cartridge carrier latch to raise the cartridge carrier lid.
4. Remove the used print cartridge.

Sometimes the ink cartridge carrier won't automatically move to its loading position even when the printer is on and the cover is open. Follow the steps below:

1. Unplug the printer from the power source.

2. With the cover open, hold the solid white strip that connects from the carrier assembly to the ink cartridge carrier and gently slide the cartridge carrier to the center of the printer.

3. Remove the used cartridges.

4. Load the new cartridges. Close the cover.

5. Plug the printer back to the power source.

Sorry to know you're in trouble with your printer. Here are my suggestions: You have to buy a new genuine cartridge or you can refill ink. Be warned! Refilling ink or using a refilled ink cartridges will not work until the ink cartridge chip or ink monitor is disabled. There may be some ink covering the circuit pads on either the ink cartridge or the flexible circuit board that makes contact to those small gold pads on the ink cartridge. I have been able to get cartridges to work by cleaning both the pads on the flexible circuit in the printer and the ink cartridge very carefully with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.

Power on the printer, gently raise or pull the head up when it has finished loading and ready to print. you will notice that the ink cartridge house moves to the middle.

Now power off the printer with the printer head still raised, gently load the ink cartridge you want to insert into the printer and pull the printer head down back after you have load it.

You can now power on your printer to boot up.

Aligning an Ink Cartridge You may need to align the ink cartridge when characters are not properly formed or are not aligned at the left margin, or when vertical or straight lines appear wavy.
To align the ink cartridge:

hmmm am afriad if u had a warrant for it just take it back to them and get a new one...plastic staffs are hard to fix.

I was same problem. Ink cartridge model chance and new was really tight. I put ink first down and then push right place and pull lever down after that.

May need a new ink loader.
May just be a weak spring loading the ink, or you have a ink stick that is just stuck , not pushed into position.
