We have a big screen tv that is a phillips magnavox and we have no picture but great sound,on our tv screen it has a rainbow color line down the middle...what could that be????

You need a professional. Your degausing circuit has failed.
Stop using the TV until it is repaired.

This is especially common with Phillips/Magnavox - A foggy image usually suggests that the coolant in the picture tube(s) (1or all 3) has become discolored and needs to be replaced. The only way to check this is to look directly into the crt faces (disassembly required) to see the condition of the fluid (coolant). I just had a rainbow of colors on my tv screen...i thought it was a problem with my TV...however the screen went the "sign off" screen (verticle lines-red/blue/green) Then all of a sudden the picture came back and all was back to normal again.
So I say it's nto your TV it is a station problem!
we just bought a 55 inch phillips magnavox and told it was working fine when we got it home and turned it on it was a red screen and was really foggy. we looked up some tv repair places and ONLY 1 told us it was the picture tube and to look down them with a flashlight for bacteria! sure enough the green and blue had it. so we found one place that would sell us the coolant fluid that you have to change the others could get it in or wanted us to bring the tv to them. we did it our selves the stuff was $17.00 a bottle or if we took it in it would be about $375.00. we have a great picture now and it wasn't as hard as all the other repair places said.
can you post a picture of your screen or send it to my email [email protected] as it sounds like its just the convergence Ics and the 6.8 ohm resistors, but a pic would help me do a accurate diagfnosis.
Sounds like a solder or connection issue on the small signal panel. which is the ciruit baord on the left hand side of the set looking in from the rear of the set.
The description of the problem points to the picture tube being bad because of the rainbow colors,as far as the white lines you might have an open resistor in the crt board,a qualified technician should take care of the problem if the set is repairable and He will know as soon as he sees it.Good luck.
