Press and hold the power button for fifteen seconds or so. Does it turn off then? If so, press and hold the power button for a second or two. Does it start to reboot then? Does it work properly now?

It won't turn on all it says on the screen is kindle fire nothing else

Maybe the Kindle is frozen on that screen. The Kindle HDX User Guide suggests a hard reset by holding down the power button for 20 seconds before releasing it. That should shut the Kindle down. Be sure to not have the Kindle on a charger or hooked up to a USB cable during the hard reset. Next restart the Kindle. If that fails then charge the Kindle as you would normally do and when done detach the charger and USB cable and try another hard reset. If all fails go to www.amazon.com/kindlesupport.

Kindle will not shut off-goes to shut off or cancel but wont move. doesnt charge well-doesnt always hold charge

Patricia, Using the power switch, you can forcibly reset your Kindle device. This reset will shut down the Kindle without accessing the shutdown command from within the Kindle's operating system, a particularly useful tool when dealing with a frozen Kindle. To initiate a hard shutdown, Kindle disconnect from its charger, slide and hold the power switch for about 20 seconds. This will force the Kindle to shut down, now it can be restarted normally.

To turn off the Kindle Fire HD completely, hold the power button down for 2-3 seconds and release. A "Shut Down" button will appear (opposite "Cancel"). Touch that button. Allow the unit to cycle off completely. Wait one minute, then power up again. Your functionality should be restored.

My kindle screen no longer works. It is charged and the side cursor works. It is about a year old and has not had much use.

if they sidebar works and you don't have an image on the screen, you definitely need a new screen. Amazon should give you a free replacement. If you're out warranty, you can get the part at Kindle Repair and there is a guide that shows you how to open a kindle and install parts at Kindle Repair Guide.
