Maybe the Kindle is frozen on that screen. The Kindle HDX User Guide suggests a hard reset by holding down the power button for 20 seconds before releasing it. That should shut the Kindle down. Be sure to not have the Kindle on a charger or hooked up to a USB cable during the hard reset. Next restart the Kindle. To turn off the Kindle Fire HD completely, hold the power button down for 2-3 seconds and release. A "Shut Down" button will appear (opposite "Cancel"). Touch that button. Allow the unit to cycle off completely. Wait one minute, then power up again. Your functionality should be restored.

When was the last time the tablet was turned off (not just put into sleep mode)?

if they sidebar works and you don't have an image on the screen, you definitely need a new screen. Amazon should give you a free replacement.
