When your network was set up someone put a password in to protect your network from having unauthorized connections to it. That password is needed by every computer that has a network card. Someone added that password to your laptop, but if I were to come into your house (invited of course) my computer would see your network name, but I would not be able to access it untill you told me your password and I entered it into my network access. What your kindle is telling you is that you must put that password into its network card, and after that it will remember it just like your laptop. Now if you were to take your kindle to McDonalds, it would not need a password and would connect up. This is because McDonalds operates an "OPEN" network that does not have a password and welcomes everybody to connect up. Remember when you use the McDonalds "OPEN" network, your session would be available to any one that wanted to snoop, and could capture what you wrote including paswords to banks, other networks etc.
