I turn on the PS3 and it freezes

turn your ps3 off then when you touch the power butter hold it iuntil you hear two beeps on the second beep let go and the main system ovveride scree will show up click on restore settings to default and it should go back to normal

All you need to do is turn it off then turn it back on and hold the reset/power button for a few seconds until it beeps then this will automatically setup your PS3 to whatever your TV is setup, I have found this to be an awesome help.

could be the cooling fans not working properly

Did you try resetting your ps3?

Try Accessing the Ps3 Recovery Menu
Turn off Ps3
Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again
Once the system has been shutdown, re-press your finger until you hear 2 consecutive (quick) beeps
When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button
You will be prompted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the ps button
The recovery menu will pop up

* restart system
* restore default settings
* restore file system
*rebuild database
*restore ps3
*system update
Now I was not sure which one to choose. I clicked restart system and that did NOT work so I clicked restore ps3 and lost everything but it DEFINITELY WORKED!!

Hey ok wait a sec so nothing is displayed on the screen?
Does it power off or down?
Ok it sounds like a simple setting error..
Turn system off then on and let the red light show up.
Then push the power button down for 5 sec and/or wait until it beeps.. it will reset itself and turn back on.. still nothing? do it up to 10 times and let me know if this is not the issue thanks!!

start it up without the memory card and dvd in it

switch of the console, first by holdin the power button for two seconds then the main power switch at the back. then pull out the power cord. wait for it to cool. dust it gently put it in an open space standing(vertically). when it cools after a few hours, try to turn it on again.
