Doesn't sound like a hardware problem if it just plays movies. Seems to be a sofware problem. I dont know how to flash a ps3 but it might help if you tried flashing the drive.
Very odd that it will play Bluray DVDs but not games. It could be an issue with the harddrive since many games store important information the harddrive and then read it off of there. I suppose the issue could be cropping up because the PS3 cannot access that information on your harddrive thus causing it to fail to play those titles.
What you could try is backing up all the information you have on your harddrive and then formatting it etc. This should clear any corruption. To test if it is indeed any corrupted data then you can test a newly formatted harddrive and see if that allows you to play games just fine. If you have a spare 2.5" SATA HDD lying around, then go ahead and use that as your test drive (keep in mind it will have to be formatted by the PS3 etc).
if it will still read ps2 cds dvds and ps1 games then your blu laser just burnt out this is a common problem. if you are under warrenty still send it back if not you can pay sony $200 to fix it or loose your warrenty and spend $80 and 10 min of your time to fix it. message back if you wnat to know more and how to fix yourself
Ok go out and get a cd cleaner. Should take care of it IF ITS DUST>
It costs 7-10$ and if it fixes your issue then you save a bunch!
If not you will need to make sure Sony's warrenty is not valid and its not if you dont have the recipet.
You can take it apart and instal a new blu ray unit or send it to sony for 150$ plus s&h.
I have blu ray parts if you need them.
Will not load the game and if it does it will kick me out the first game i play
