When you boot it up try to connect to external monitor, if you see something on that then it might be the backlight or inverter.

Start up

First I will suggest you to Return BIOS settings to their default levels. An overclocked or misconfigured BIOS can cause all sorts of random issues, including black screen
After that restart your computer and then press and hold F8 keys until you get Advanced Options menu screen.Use the arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, and then press Enter, your computer will boot automatically to safe mode.
If you able to start in safe mode then update your graphic drivers from the manufacture site of your laptop

The backlight for my pavilion dv2000 is not lighting up. the laptop boot ugh i can see faintly, am able to move the mouse and open any program the screen remains so faint ie partially black

Well looks like your cfl tube is dead or the card powering it is dead. the easiest thing to do is to
find a Laptop repair center, the can change either the backlight tube (like a neon tube really) or the inverter or the whole screen.

You might want to try it yourself if you find a working screen for your HP.
Is is fastidious but not that dificult.

Here you can see a step by step tutorial on how to remove the screen for another Hp model.

The screen remains black when computer is turned

maybe a hardware problem, on booting the pc, move the screen to every angle to see if there is a connection problem.
If so, then use your warranty if you have one.

My HP Pavilion dv2000 turns on, but screen is black

If the laptop appears to boot up but the LCD screen is black, then the problem is a back-light fault caused by either a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions to determine the fault and fix :-

Display not working for HP pavilion dv2000

Try to attach your computer to an external monitor to see if it is a screen issue or a motherboard issue. If the computer does not pick up on the external right away, try to toggle it by holding down the Fn key and striking F4. If you get a picture on the external, then you have only lost the screen and the motherboard shouyld be fine.

HP Pavilion dv2000 black screen.

yep ...it seams that you mess with the grafic card ( vga driver ) ..probably on color register ..or some driver update ..and now it wont display image ...
either reinstall the pc ...and its probably the best ...or restore using cd .. cause if it was something wrong with your display ..it should work on the other monitor... it also might be a video card fail ...if after re-installation its the same ...its the video card..
if you are worried for the data on il ...just install windows without formating ...choose to install a new os in the old folder...

Hp pavilion dv2000 notebook will not boot up

hi,
i m in Hong Kong. The stupid HP repair center charged US 90 just for inspection!!!!! They they said the whole motherboard had to be replaced, thts additional US 630 dollars, the thing is just 1.5 yr old. They also said i don get to keep the broken mother board after replacement. This is simply irresponsible, unethical, sleazy and UNJUST!!

Thanks. right now the computer is fixed for US70. when i hv time, i'll open it up and see if i can figure it out how it was fixed. The shop suggested tht the computer wont last too long. This is such bad quality for HP... Sorry, i hv to do the following for other victims to find this easily:
