You should not go to service mode for convergence adjustment IF convergence data has not been changed / tempered as yet.
I think TV was working fine until above said parts blown out. You replaced but problem still exist. This means there is still few parts in  convergence section need your attention and to be tested.

  • Anonymous Jan 13, 2009

Convergence data will mess up if service mode adjustment touched as its job of qualified tech.

You need to download a service manual for your tv.. check techlore.com or servicemanuals.com - the service manual will tell you everything you need to know to get your TV into service mode, Also It will have complete instructions on how to set the coarse convergence and fine convergence - after this, you will be able to save the data so the intellisense mode will set the tv back to how YOU set the convergence. Good luck, and let me know if you have more questions.

  • Anonymous Jan 06, 2009

Robshow has posted a link to the service manual.. also, I forgot to add, If you replaced the Convergence IC's, make sure you bought new SANYO IC's - there are TONS of cheapie counterfiet chineese IC's on ebay for 5.00 ---  these IC's are very unpredictable, they may last 3 years, they may burn up in 3 minutes. If you used cheap IC's then they could also be the reason you couldnt get the convergence lined back up correctly.

  • Anonymous Jan 06, 2009

Nevermind, the manual Robshow attached is the Owners manual, you need the SERVICE manual.

They have the service manual available for immediate download at manualuniverse.com for 17.99

Just select Phillips/Magnavox and type in the model number, 55PP9401.

Convergence problems i already used intellisense button and it does not work i still see double.

you need to replace both chips this set uses; either STK-392-120 OR 110.

AS YOU LOOK FROM THE BACK THEY WILL BE AND IDENTICAL METAL HEAT SINKS WITH FINS TO THE FAR LEFT--NOTE NUMBER ON THE FRONT OF THEM.

TOTAL PARTS COST WOULD BE UNDER 20 DOLLARS AND I CAN STEP YOU THROUGH IT IF YOU WANT.

IF this information told you something you did not know, rate it as very helpful as I do this here for free.

Our TV has, almost what appears to be, a double image suddenly. any ideas?

This sounds like a convergence problem.

If model number is AV48WP30 go into the customer menu and select CONVERGENCE---if Red or Blue will not move in some direction one or both of the two STK-392-110 CHIPS this set uses for convergence is bad.

What happens is the convergence chips are black in color--about 2 1/2 inches wide X 1 1/2 inches tall with 18 pins each----the back of each is metal--when they are installed(each is mounted to a metal heatsink to keep it cool) they apply a white grease to transfer heat quickly----

After some years the grease dries out and one of the chips overheats and fails.

Not a real hard repair to do if you are handy and know how to solder----

Most shops are going to charge about 300 or more for this repair-----considering you can buy all the parts for under 25 dollars if you or someone you know can do it you can save a lot of money.

I can give you general instructions for this repair on this set.

I have repaired hundreds of sets with convergence troubles--very common problem.

Let me know if you have questions or need advice.

Intellisense button

If the model number on the set is 55PP9401/55 you have an interesting set----this model says Philips but was made by Hitachi---they made them for Philips for one year while Philips was gearing up to produce their own sets---very good set and is better than the Philips sets that came after it.
It uses (if it is this model) two STK-392-110 CONVERGENCE IC's----both need to be replaced and the set adjusted---no need for an original remote---with the set engaged in the convergence adjustment mode( there is a micro switch on the front of the main circuit board) A HITACHI REMOTE CAN THEN BE USED TO ADJUST THE CONVERGENCE. Hope this was helpful.

My magnavox projection tv has convergence problem.

there are 12 6.8 ohm 1watt resistors in your model. There could be more blown resistors as they often wont show any outward sign of being bad. It could also be the ACS board which is defective if the Resistors are good.

Everything is shadowed and the picture itself seems to be a bit darker. Tried running Intellisense, came back with '4'... I have my owners manual and there is nothing about Intellisense, not how to use it,...

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

f0900cb.jpg
Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

2c07611.pngSolution #2

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Convergence

If you cannot align, the ICs probably need to be replaced. You can check the input on feedback resistors in front of the ICs with an ohm meter. Some resistors may be bad causing your problem. Usually you would need to replace the ICs and bad resistors and do a full re-alignment to fix.
